The Oklahoma native rose to fame portraying Scott Summers aka Cyclops in the 2000 film X-Men and reprised the role in the the 2003 sequel X2, and the 2006 film X-Men: The Last Stand. James also played Cyclops in a cameo the 2014 movie X-Men: Days of Future Past.

James also famously portrayed Lon Hammond in the 2004 romantic drama The Notebook.

His film credits also include: Superman Returns, Hairspray, 27 Dresses, The Butler and Shock And Awe.

James starred in the Amazon Freevee series Jury Duty portraying a parody of himself in the mockumentary.

Jury Duty premiered in April and featured Ronald Gladden, a solar contractor from San Diego, who was the only one in the courtroom unaware that everyone else was an actor during a fake trial.

‘It was the wildest experience I’ve ever done as an actor and kind of one of the most rewarding experiences,’ James said of playing a conceited version of himself as a juror.

‘In this business where it really feels like there’s not a lot of original work out there or original ideas, this felt like something that we’ve never seen before,’ he added.

James also insisted that Jury Duty not become a prank show and helped create a hero’s journey for Gladden.

‘We lay out a path in front of him to become the leader of this ragtag group of weirdos and unify us all by the end of it,’ he said.

‘We´re kind of playing God a little bit in this. I needed to make sure it was more than just getting a laugh out of it,’  James added. ‘It had to have more heart than that. And I think it does.’

Participants described an unusual filming process in which there was no set daily dialogue, only possible scenarios and ideas to explore with unsuspecting Ronald as improv actors tapped in or out.

‘You had to be very nimble. But I think that was the exciting part of it. I wasn´t seeing script pages in my head. I didn´t have a director talking in my ear. It was like you´re on the fly and you’ve got to flow with it. And that was really, really rewarding and fun,’ James aid.

There was one time when James left the sequestered jury room, saying he needed to visit the bathroom, and instead snuck into the production control room to discuss funny ways to keep a scenario going.

The cast had to make sure they didn’t push the comedy too much to prevent Ronald from becoming suspicious. One day after it got too bizarre, the actors said nothing funny and court proceedings droned on to keep Ronald off their scent. After the reveal, Ronald and the cast have remained friendly and have hung out.

James previously revealed that he passed on the hit male stripping comedy movie Magic Mike.

During an appearance on James Corden’s The Late Late Show back in 2021, the actor admitted feeling regret for turning down the role he was offered in the Steven Soderbergh movie.

‘There’s been a few things I’ve said no to in the past that I’m happy I said no to and a few things that maybe if I could redo it, I’d do it over,’ the actor said.

James explained he passed on the part due to ‘a lack of courage’.

‘I had the fear that I would be edited out of the movie and all my lines would be cut out and I would just be an extra running around in a g-string,’ he joked.

He added: ‘I have friends and family who still think that it was a wise idea for me not to do it because they don’t want to see me like that.’

Released in 2012, Magic Mike starred Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer, Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, and Matthew McConaughey.

The comedy-drama centers on Tatum’s character Mike who makes a living as a stripper at the Xquisite Strip Club in Tampa, Florida, which was owned by former stripper Dallas, played by McConaughey.
