But after just 22 minutes he stayed down after a heavy challenge.

Afterwards Wigan boss Leam Richardson said he was hopeful the injury was not as bad as first feared.

‘You never want to see anyone go down like that, especially one of the young lads,’ Richardson told wigantoday.net

‘He got a big whack, and the knee has swollen quite a lot.

‘We’ll have to wait to see how it settles down, but the medical team are on with that.

The young defender was unable to carry on after suffering the injury in the 22nd minute

‘Fingers crossed it doesn’t look as severe as maybe it first did, but with the knees you never know.’

Wigan won the match 2-0.

The match was only Carragher junior’s third senior appearance for the Latics, and his second start, after signing his first professional deal in the summer.

He made his first appearance as a sub against Hull in a League Cup tie in August before playing the full 90 minutes against Wolves U21s in an EFL Trophy tie.
