Jamie Carragher says ‘we’ll find out a lot about Spurs’ in Stamford Bridge trip – and claims talk of a Tottenham title bid will be ‘winding up’ Chelsea, but they will be worried about bitter rivals taking their mantle as London’s top club

  • Jamie Carragher thinks Spurs want to become the top club in the capital
  • Former defender says Chelsea will want to prove that they are still the top team
  • Spurs have only won one of their last 37 games at Chelsea in all competitions

Jamie Carragher believes Spurs will want to beat Chelsea and stake their claim to being the best team in London.

Spurs have been transformed since the arrival of Italian manager Antonio Conte, who orchestrated the team’s charge back into the Champions League after they finished fourth in the Premier League last season.

The north London side will be aiming to overtake Chelsea as the best team in the capital. The Blues are currently the Champions of the World after winning the FIFA Club World Cup last year.

Jamie Carragher thinks a lot will be found out about Spurs during the game at Stamford Bridge

Former Liverpool defender Carragher has said that the game between the two London clubs will show a lot about Spurs, as he claims they need to improve their record at Stamford Bridge.

Spurs have only won one of their previous 37 games at the ground in all competitions, drawing 12 times and losing the over 24 games.

Talking on Sky Sports, Carragher said: ‘I think we’ll see a lot about what Spurs are about today and I don’t mean that in terms of the result. You’ve just mentioned how many times they’ve won here, it’s embarrassing.

‘Two top teams in London and to only come here and win once in the Premier League era, Antonio Conte has to change that.

‘If you look at the record last season against Manchester City and Liverpool, really big results.

‘But in terms of challenging the top teams and the talk of Spurs this season and what they’ve brought in, I actually think it might wind Chelsea up a little bit.’

The retired defender thinks that Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea side will want to prove a point against Spurs and show that they are still the top team in London.

He said: ‘Considering what Chelsea have won in the past, they’re still world champions, thinking that Spurs might take their mantle as the top team in London.

‘I think Chelsea will want to answer a few people today.’

Former Chelsea player Karen Carney has shared concerns for the club, as she thinks they are no stronger than they were last season and that they still have work to do in the transfer market.

She said: ‘Given the turbulence, I still don’t think they’re stronger. I think it’s just one area – centre forward. Until they get that situation sorted, I think they’ll still be in the same place season after season.

‘Mason Mount gets 11, previous season Jorginho gets seven. I don’t think those are two stats that are going to win you the Premier League.

‘I think they’re not stronger at this moment but it’ll be interesting to see where they are at the end of the window.’

However, Graeme Souness thinks that Spurs have closed the gap to Chelsea and that the teams are now evenly matched. The former manager believes that Conte has developed the squad at Spurs and that they will be one of the top clubs this season.

He said: ‘I think they’re quite evenly matched but I would edge more towards Spurs right now. I really like their manager. I think Tuchel is a really good manager, he’s proved that in his career, but I just think its onwards and upwards for Spurs.

‘I think they’ve got a manager who pushes the players to the point of falling out with them, just how it has to be. He knows where that line is. I think they’ve signed some really good players.

‘I think it’s a very different Spurs from now on under Conte. I think this time around, whoever has been making decisions about bringing players in, right now, two games in, they look like they’ve signed really good players.

‘The proof will be in the pudding come the end of the season. I think Spurs are going to have a really good year.

‘I don’t think they’re going to win it, I think they’ll give anyone a game wherever they play. Because this manager gets them at it. He demands they’re at it all the time.’
