The defender played the full 90 minutes as Tottenham fought back to secure a remarkable victory against Ajax and book their place for the June 1 showdown in Madrid.

However, according to HLN, the Belgium international did not join the rest of his team-mates as they re-emerged after the full-time whistle to celebrate with in front of supporters on the pitch.

He was also ushered out of a back exit, instead of passing through the mixed zone – as is mandatory for European fixtures.

And footage captured by the Belgian media outlet showed Vertonghen getting on the team bus with a protective boot on his right foot.

Tottenham are waiting to examine the ankle injury fully and the player will undergo a scan before they comment on the extent of the problem.
