Prime minister Shinzo Abe hammered home the importance of Japan’s relationship with Canada by bringing back a beaver door knocker and ‘immediately’ installing it.

In an Instagram post yesterday, Abe shared a short clip of himself nailing the gift from Justin Trudeau to his house after a visit to Ottawa this weekend.

As upbeat music plays in the background, the video then cuts to Abe’s wife Akie laughing as she pulls on the string to try out the unique present for the first time.

Abe opted to install the knocker – which is in the shape of Canada’s national animal – at his home in Lake Kawaguchi rather than his official residence in Tokyo.

He shared his delight over the diplomatic present in the caption, saying he attached the souvenir ‘immediately’ while using the hashtag #doityourself.

So far, the video has racked up more than 150,000 views.

According to CTV News, the bizarre offering was purchased from a pair of Quebec wood carvers who had no idea it was going to be given to Abe.

Jean-Lionel Tremblay admitted he knew Trudeau’s office had purchased an item from the store he runs with his brother Denis, but was delighted to find out who it had been given to.

He said: ‘It makes me happy.’

Trudeau and Abe held a joint press conference about the positive impact of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (or CPTPP) which came into effect at the start of the year.

It removed trade barriers among 11 nations representing nearly 500 million consumers in the Asia-Pacific region in a bid to counter China’s growing economic influence.

At a joint press conference, visiting Abe and Trudeau said the pact has ‘benefitted tremendously’ citizens and businesses of member nations.

‘Continuing to move forward on freer and more open trade according to the rules that we can all agree on is something that we need more in the world,’ Trudeau said.
