Jason Roy injures hand for England v CA XI

Jason Roy has been taken from the field after injuring his hand in England’s only one-day warm-up match against a Cricket Australia XI in Sydney.

Four days out from the series-opening ODI against Australia in Melbourne, Roy appeared to hurt his left hand when he dropped a sharp chance at gully off Jake Carder in the 15th over.

The explosive top-order batsman remained on the field but appeared in pain for the remaining five balls of the over, before he had to go off.

Roy’s setback ahead of the five-match series comes as English star Joe Root battles to recover from illness to play in Sunday’s match.

Root isn’t playing at Drummoyne Oval against the CA XI, but is with the English team. He visited hospital briefly on Sunday’s last day of the Sydney Test, retiring hurt twice.

It follows a frustrating trend for the visitors this summer, who also had a number of injury woes before the start of the first Ashes Test in Brisbane.

Quick Steve Finn hurt his knee in training after arriving in Australia and was ruled out for the series, while pace-bowling counterpart Jake Ball also injured his ankle in a warm-up match.

Offspinning allrounder Moeen Ali’s preparations for the Test series were also impacted when he suffered a side strain at the start of the tour.
