Jeremy Corbyn calls for Brits to protest against Trump

Jeremy Corbyn was today blasted by critics after he called for Britons to take to the streets in a massive protest when Donald Trump visits the UK next year.

The Labour leader said demonstrators should ‘turn out’ in force when the US President visits London in February to formally open the new American embassy.

The veteran left-winger said a large protest would send a ‘very clear message’ to Mr Trump that his policies are not popular in Britain.

But Mr Corbyn was accused of being ‘irresponsible’ by stirring up a hostile reception for the leader of Britain’s closest ally.

Tory MP Michael Fabricant told Mail Online: ‘Everyone has the right to peaceful protest but Jeremy Corbyn is being irresponsible as he knows full well this is likely to escalate into violence.’

He added: ‘Besides, whether you like Donald Trump or not, the United States is one of our most important allies and we are good mutual friends to each other.

‘So this comment by Corbyn is hardly one of a Prime Minister in waiting.’

Theresa May first extended an invite to Mr Trump to come to Britain for a Royal state visit soon after he became President early last year.

The offer sparked warnings that London’s streets will be mobbed by the largest protests that the country has ever seen.

Hard-left and anarchist groups are believed to be mobilising to lead their followers onto the streets to join the demonstrations.

And the Met Police are braced for the protests to spill over into violence if Mr Trump does visit.

Mr Corbyn tore into the US President over his policies on the environment and for retweeting the British Far-Right group Britain First.

He told the Daily Mirror’s podcast: ‘My message to Donald Trump is this you represent a country that has been through some amazing social transformation – from the growth of the civil rights movement, the way in which Martin Luther King stood up for the rights of black people and was assassinated for it.

‘And then you retweet stuff that is unbelievable and racist such as the stuff from Britain First.

‘Please think of the people you have the honour to represent before you do that.’

He adds: ‘And I would also say you might have some disagreement with the Paris Climate Change Accord but you know what, you and I live on the same planet, you and I breathe the same air, you and I both rely on the same oceans.

‘If you stuff the oceans with plastic and pollute the air we all suffer.

‘If you a very powerful world leader and support the climate change agreement and pursue an agenda of ending the pollution e are making in this planet you will serve future generations well.

‘But if you deregulate and allow it to get worse future generations will suffer and, you know, you might yourself.’

Mr Corbyn also said Mr Trump’s Muslim travel ban and the construction of the wall on the Mexican border were ‘quite awful.’

Relations between Britain and the US have taken a battering in recent weeks after Mr Trump retweeted anti-Muslim propaganda put out by Britain First.

Mrs May condemned the move but her words sparked a furious response from the US President.

In an extraordinary outburst on Twitter, Mr Trump told the PM ‘don’t focus on me, focus on the destructive Radical Islamic Terrorism that is taking place within the United Kingdom. We are doing just fine!’
