Jessica Gadirova named BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year after winning World Gymnastic Championships gold as she beats diver Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix – daughter of celebrity Fred Sirieix – and skateboarder Sky Brown to the award
Jessica Gadirova has been named the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year
The 18-year-old gymnast who was also named in the six-person shortlist to win the main prize of the evening, beat diver Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix and 14-year-old skateboarder Sky Brown to clinch the award.
Gadirova became only the fifth British gymnast to win an individual world title as she claimed floor gold in her home city of Liverpool last month.

Gadirova won three medals at the World Gymnastic Championships in her home city of Liverpool
At the world championships, she also took a silver in the team competition as well as a bronze medal in the individual all-around.
After winning the award she said: ‘Thank you to my support team, my coaches, British gymnastics, my friends and family this – goes to you I wouldn’t be able to achieve this without you. You mean the world to me so this goes to you.’
The teenager is also a two-time European floor champion and competes alongside her sister Jennifer who she paid special tribute to while speaking on stage.
Before winning the award she said: ‘Obviously the year started with the Commonwealths, we did amazing to come away with a team gold. At the Europeans we achieved silver which helped us qualify for the Worlds.

‘To be in the home crowd at Liverpool was such an incredible experience. The girls were just amazing. To come second in the team final was amazing. Then to top it all over achieving gold on the floor.
‘I knew it was the last comp so I gave it my all, blocked everything out and put the best performance out for Great Britain.
‘Jennifer just means the world to me, we’ve grown up side by side. To be on the floor final with me just melts my heart. I couldn’t imagine not being there with her, I love you Jen.’

Spendolini-Sirieix, 18, was the 2020 winner of the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year and won seven diving medals across the Worlds, European Championships and the Commonwealth Games in 2022.
The daughter of First Dates’ Fred Fred Sirieix, started with a team bronze at the Worlds, before seizing two golds and a silver from this summer’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, including a personal best in the 10m platform final.
The Euros in Rome saw her also win two more golds, as well as team bronze.
All roads lead to Paris 2024, where she will surely be in contention for a first Olympic medal, having finished seventh in her individual final on her debut in Toyko last year.
Brown meanwhile was the winner of last year’s Young Sports Personality of the Year.
This year the skateboarder took a gold medal at the X Games held in California and the Dew Tour.
Gadirova is one of six sports stars shortlisted for the main award and is up against Beth Mead, Eve Muirhead, Ronnie O’Sullivan, Ben Stokes and Jake Wightman.
