Jets and Redskins practice game breaks out into all-out brawl

The first joint practice between the Jets and the Redskins descended into chaos as the players broke out in a heated fight, ahead of Thursday’s preseason game.

In footage captured by fans, initial tensions between players exploded into an all-out fight when Jets cornerback Trumaine Johnson appeared to be blocked late in a play by Redskins tackle Morgan Moses.

Johnson retaliated by taking a ‘cheap shot’ at Moses, who was later seen limping and escorted off the field.

‘It was a cheap shot. We reacted how we reacted. It settled down, and we just kept practicing,’ Redskins LT Trent Williams said.

Jets coach Todd Bowles said the practice had been a ‘waste of time’ and ‘if they wanted to be boxers and wrestlers, they’d probably be in another sport,’ the New York Post reported.

‘We’re trying to get better. They’re trying to get better. Some things happened — overzealousness. I’ll talk to my guys. [Washington] Coach [Jay] Gruden will talk to his guys,’ Bowles said.

But Redskins cornerback Josh Norman said fights during joint practices were expected.

‘It wasn’t like nobody knew that was going to happen in the first place,’ he explained.

‘Personally I think practicing against ourselves would be better, but I don’t make the rules and I sure don’t make these calls,’ Norman said.

‘You don’t get anything out of them, man. Like, what do we get out of that? We were practicing well. It’s just the offensive guys that, it seemed like every time we turned around they were going at it.’

Opinions were divided over Twitter as fans shared their thoughts over the scuffle.

‘Shameful. Act like professionals,’ one fan said.

‘Why do they even hold Joint Practices? You know a fight is bound to happen,’ another asked.

The practice was called short about 15 minutes early when a torrential downpour halted any further games.
