The politician father of TV and radio personality Erin Molan has announced he has been diagnosed with an ‘aggressive’ form of cancer.

‘Whilst this news has come as a shock, I have many reasons to be positive,’ he said in a statement.

‘I am receiving the best possible care from my clinicians and have the love, support and prayers of my family.’

Molan will begin treatment as soon as possible, vowing to fight the disease.

‘I have never been afraid to fight the battles that need fighting and this is no exception,’ he said.

The 70-year-old will undergo further testing this week to determine the exact prognosis and best treatment plan.

Molan first entered politics in 2016 after a successful 16-year military career.

Following his retirement in 2008, he released a biography titled Running the War in Iraq, which detailed his experience as Chief of Operations in Iraq between 2004 and 2005.

Despite announcing he would step back from politics to focus on his physical health, Molan said his office would remain committed to ‘working on the issues that matter’ alongside the Morrison government.
