TV personalities Jim Wilson and Chris Bath have spoken of their desperate attempts to protect their family home from bushfires racing towards their property.

The couple revealed the threat to their home in New South Wales’ Lower Hunter Valley was so dangerous by Thursday they made the decision to invest heavily in fire-protection gear.

The well-known presenters added their cars are filled with some of their most precious belongings should they need to make a quick getaway from the flames.

'We knew we stood no chance if the mega fire that has developed in the Hunter over the past 48 hours hit us, but thought we could fight the ember attacks and spot fires,' Jim said (pictured the thick red sky surrounding their property)

‘We invested in fire trailers, roof sprinklers on the house and shed, fire hoses, pumps, generators and fire protective gear,’ Jim wrote in a column for The Sunday Telegraph.

‘We knew we stood no chance if the mega fire that has developed in the Hunter over the past 48 hours hit us, but thought we could fight the ember attacks and spot fires.’

The presenter said the smoke was still thick in the sky as he wrote and he and his wife remain on high alert into the weekend.

‘We are by no means out of the woods yet and it is going to be a tense few days and Summer ahead,’ he said.

The sports reporter also praised his employer for letting him take time off to protect his home and said his neighbours had shown him what community spirit was all about.

‘To our handyman/ mechanic guru Arthur who’s taught us so much – he didn’t blink an eyelid and was purely focused on saving lives and other properties.’

The couple opened up about their perilous situation as two fires in the Lower Hunter region merged with the Gospers Mountain fire in the Hawkesbury.

In total, the three fires have destroyed about 10 homes and 300,000 hectares of land.
