Liverpool defender Joel Matip is expected for be out for the rest of the season as he is likely to have surgery on a thigh injury.

Matip suffered the injury during the Reds’ 2-1 win at Crystal Palace on Saturday although he did play the full match.

However following a medical examination after the game, it has been revealed Matip may need an operation to heal the injury, according to Liverpool’s official website.

As a result the centre back is set to miss the rest of the season.

Manager Jurgen Klopp is due to provide more information on the extent of Matip’s injury later on Tuesday during his pre-match press conference.

Liverpool host Manchester City in the first leg of the quarter-finals of the Champions League on Wednesday night.

The injury blow comes at a crucial stage of the season with two crucial games against City in the Champions League and six games left to play in the league to ensure they qualify for the European competition next season.
