Legendary French chef Joel Robuchon, the cook with the most Michelin stars in the world, has died aged 73.

Robuchon reportedly died of cancer in his home in Geneva, his spokesperson said today. 

The chef, who famously mentored Gordon Ramsay, owned and ran gourmet restaurants in three continents.

French chef Joel Robuchon, who owned and ran restaurants in three continents including several awarded three Michelin stars, died on Monday in Geneva aged 73

His venues, in cities such as Paris, London, Hong Kong, Las Vegas and Tokyo, boasts a total of 32 Michelin Guide stars between them.

Robuchon was named among the best craftsmen in France in 1976 and crowned the ‘chef of the century’ by the Gault et Millau cooking guide in 1990.  

Robuchon was known for his constant innovation and even playfulness in the kitchen – a revelation to the hidebound world of French cuisine.  

He was also known for his fiery disposition, with Ramsay liking it to ‘working for the SAS’, and saying that in comparison with Robuchon, the famously short-tempered Marco Pierre White was a ‘f***ing pussycat’.
