John Jarratt’s wife has spoken out for the first time about the former housemate who accused her husband of rape.

The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, alleged Jarratt raped her in a sharehouse in 1976 when she was 19.

In an exclusive interview with 60 Minutes Jarratt’s wife, Rosa Miano, said the woman’s police statement  ‘was like a dark sexual fantasy’.

Jarratt was found not guilty of rape on July 5 after a jury took just 15 minutes to acquit him.

The woman approached police in 2017 and alleged Jarratt had non-consensual sex with her at a Randwick house, in Sydney’s east, more than 40 years ago.

At the time Jarratt had been sharing the house with his now wife Rosa and at least one other person.

Speaking to 60 Minutes Jarratt said he was seduced by his accuser into having consensual sex.

‘She was sort of seductive,’ Jarratt said of his former housemate.

‘I felt guilt and remorse and I’d just made a huge mistake cheating on my wife.’

Jarratt is better known for his role in horror hit film ‘Wolf Creek’ and starred in 1975 Australian classic Picnic at Hanging Rock and the movie Australia, as well as on TV shows McLeod’s Daughters and Play School.

The 66-year-old said the allegations had damaged his career and made him a social pariah.

He said in one instance he was called a ‘filthy pig’ while shopping at a supermarket.

During his trial, Jarratt told NSW District Court sex with the woman was consensual.

Following a 20-month-long court battle, the jury took only a short matter of time to hand down a not-guilty verdict

‘(She said) she found me attractive and, from there, there was, I feel, a seduction,’ he told the court.

‘I, unfortunately, participated in that. I willingly had sex with her and she willingly had sex with me. It was consensual.’

The former housemate had claimed she was woken about 3am by Jarratt ripping off her bed covers and underwear before pinning her down and raping her.

She told the jury she didn’t report the rape to authorities earlier because she feared she wouldn’t be believed.

Under questioning from his barrister Greg James QC, Jarratt said after the encounter there was no further intimacy or any animosity between them.

Speaking briefly outside court, Jarratt said he was ‘over the moon’ with the verdict.

‘I’ve got a wonderful team here, this is my family. I’m just so relieved,’ he said.
