John Paul McQueen returns to Hollyoaks! James Sutton will reprise his role two years after taking a break from the soap

James Sutton has confirmed he will return to Hollyoaks as his character John Paul McQueen after a two-year break from the soap.

The actor, 36, made his last appearance on the soap in 2017 when his character left to start a new life in Singapore after his romance with James Nightingale (Gregory Finnegan) ended.

In explosive scenes, John is set to come face-to-face with his rapist Finn O’Connor (Keith Rice) five years after the haunting storyline first aired on our screens.

Hollyoaks fans will remember John was raped by student Finn when he was teaching at a school where he suffered an onslaught of homophobic abuse.

James will start shooting scenes for the soap once again in two months time — and he revealed he can’t wait to be back. 

He said: ‘I’m delighted to be returning and reprising the role of John Paul, a character that I care deeply about.

‘The cast and crew of Hollyoaks are among the loveliest and hardest working I know and I’m really looking forward to being back with them.’  

The English hunk first starred on Hollyoaks in 2006 and left the cast in 2006; he made a comeback in 2012 before he left for a second time five years later in 2017.

His character John had notable romances with Craig Dean (Guy Burnet) and Ste Hay (Kieron Richardson).

Pleased to welcome him back after two years, Hollyoaks’ official Twitter read: ‘You heard it here first! @thejamessutton is making a return to #Hollyoaks! 

‘Could your Wednesday get any better? What do you think is in store for John Paul? Here’s a few words from the man himself… (sic)” James said he will begin filming in two months’ time.’ 

Accompanied with a video, James went on: ‘Alright! I am very excited and very pleased to announce that I am returning to Hollyoaks, John Paul is returning to ‘Hollyoaks’. “I start filming again in about eight weeks’ times and yeah, I can’t wait. 

‘I can’t wait to see what they’ve got in store for John Paul and I am super excited to see you all soon.’

During his two years away, James has thrown himself into work at the theatre as he took a break from the television screen. James landed a part in Rope at Queen’s Theatre, Hornchurch.

He also embarked on a tour across the UK and New York City with Caroline’s Kitchen by the Original Theatre Company.
