Jordan Pefok sends a message with a powerful header after being left out of USMNT squad

Are you watching Gregg? On-fire Jordan Pefok sends a message with a glancing header to fire Union Berlin back to the top of the Bundesliga… just days after the striker was left out of Berhalter’s USMNT squad

  • Jordan Pefok helped Union Berlin to a 2-0 victory over Wolfsburg on Sunday
  • The American headed home in the 55th minute to open the scoring for Union
  • He was a notable omission from the USMNT squad for this month’s friendlies
  • The forward will hope his recent performance will earn him a World Cup spot

American forward Jordan Pefok opened the scoring with a glancing header during Union Berlin’s win over Wolfsburg on Sunday.

Sheraldo Becker set up Pefok to open the scoring in the 55th minute, then the Suriname forward raced clear to seal the 2-0 win in the 77th, giving Union a two-point lead over Borussia Dortmund after seven games in the Bundesliga.

Becker showed pace against his marker before crossing for Pefok to score with a glancing header. It was the American´s third Bundesliga goal in six appearances since his summer switch from Young Boys.

Becker sealed it when he took Paul Seguin´s pass with his shoulder after Arnold lost the ball and raced through to coolly finish for his sixth goal of season.

Both Pefok and Becker were given standing ovations when they went off in the 87th.

Pefok headed home just four days after USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter has named a 26-man squad for the team’s September friendlies.

However, Pefok had been a notable omission from the squad, despite his promising start to the Bundesliga season.

In addition to his three goals, the striker also has three assists to his name in a stellar start to life in the German top division, as well as having impressed both domestically and in Europe last season for Switzerland’s Young Boys.

The USMNT will play Japan and Saudi Arabia in this international window in the squad’s final tune-up before the World Cup.

Berhalter said last week that his squad for the tournament was about ’85 percent’ decided.

And Pefok will no doubt have hoped his latest success with Union Berlin will have convinced the coach he deserves a spot on the airplane to Qatar.

However, Berhalter may already be convinced as he offered clues for his decision, and it may be the case that Pefok has already earned a spot for Qatar ahead of the final World Cup tune-ups vs. Japan and Saudi Arabia.

‘We’re pretty confident we know Jordan’s profile, we know what he can do,’ Berhalter told reporters via Zoom.

‘And we didn’t feel like we needed to see him in this camp to determine whether he could be on the [World Cup] roster or not.

‘The decisions aren’t easy decisions, and I understand that Jordan should be in consideration – he was.

‘In the end we decided to go with these three strikers to evaluate them.’
