Jose Mourinho berates Roma players and Serie A’s referees after Venezia loss

‘How is it possible to create so much and not score more?’: Jose Mourinho berates his Roma players AGAIN – and Serie A’s referees – after his side surrender a 2-1 lead to lose 3-2 against Venezia

  • Roma’s woeful run continues with just one win in their last seven matches
  • Jose Mourinho’s men were 2-1 up at half-time, with Tammy Abraham scoring
  • But they slumped to defeat in the second half, losing 3-2 to Venezia

Another Roma game and another day where Jose Mourinho has hit out at referees and his own players in fury at the result.

Roma’s slump in form has stretched to one win in seven after they were beaten 3-2 by Venezia in Serie A on Sunday. They are fifth in Serie A, three points off fourth.

They led 2-1 at half-time, Tammy Abraham scoring the second for Roma, but Venezia overturned the score in the second half.

It was another frustrating day for Jose Mourinho as Roma lost 3-2 against Venezia

In his post-match remarks, Mourinho raged at his players failing to take their chances before turning to the refereeing.

He told Sky Sports Italia: ‘We created many opportunities, many half-chances and when you get into dangerous positions and don’t make the right final ball, that is frustrating.

‘We did it about 20 times, with attacking players like [Jordan] Veretout and [Lorenzo] Pellegrini near the forwards, but we didn’t make the pass. How is it possible to create so much and then not score?

‘We conceded the first goal on a set play that we had practiced yesterday and still got the defending wrong.’

Mourinho then turned on the referees, saying: ‘Another important part of the story is Venezia’s second goal. I have to protect myself here and keep my feelings to myself over what is happening.

‘I could’ve talked about the players who should’ve got yellow cards for tactical fouls, those are small details.

‘I could say we had many chances to go 3-1 up, above all with [Stephan] El Shaarawy and it’s difficult to miss, but the truth is we were 2-1 up and in control. What happened, for me… I don’t want to say anything else.

‘I prefer to just say it was a very, very important moment of the match. That is all.’

Mourinho cut a similar figure of frustration after the midweek Europa Conference League draw against Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt.

‘I think the result is harsh on us. It wasn’t a great performance, we made a lot of technical errors, especially in the first half when playing out from the back. Every time it went to Veretout or Darboe, we lost the ball,’ Mourinho told Sky Sport Italia.

‘The reality of the game is 2-2, but the two penalties were clear as day. Clear as day.

‘You can talk about whatever you want, but the reality is 2-2, they had two shots on target and two goals. We scored two goals and had two clear penalties denied.

‘I don’t know if they get referees who are poor and starting their careers for the Conference League. I didn’t say anything about the referee in Norway, because we lost 6-1, but here the two penalties were clear.’
