Jose Mourinho believes Cristiano Ronaldo’s incredible return to Manchester United is ‘perfect business’ for the Red Devils.

On a whirlwind Friday in the transfer market, it seemed early on that morning that Manchester City had stolen a march on the rivals and were set to bring the 36-year-old to the Etihad.

However, after the interventions of Bruno Fernandes and reportedly former boss and mentor Sir Alex Ferguson, the forward agreed a two-year deal at the club where he shot to stardom as a precocious winger.

Mourinho managed Ronaldo for three years at Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, with the pair winning LaLiga together in 2012 as the most expensive player ever at the time scored an astonishing 168 goals in 164 games for Los Blancos.

Roma boss Mourinho said: ‘The only thing I say – and it looks to me something basic and logic – is that if Juventus are happy, if Cristiano is happy and if Manchester United are happy this is the perfect business. I think there is no need to talk about Cristiano.

‘There is no need to make any comment about someone who plays, wins, scores and makes history for 20 years.’

Mourinho last faced Ronaldo in 2018 as United, then managed by the ex-Chelsea and Inter Milan boss, came from behind to win 2-1 in the Champions League group stage after the five-time Ballon d’Or winner had put Massimiliano Allegri’s men ahead.

The pair were due to lock horns in mid-October at the Allianz Stadium, with Ronaldo’s departure from Juve making him the latest big name to leave Serie A following the moves of Gianluigi Donnarumma and Romelu Lukaku to Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea respectively.

Roma opened their league account last weekend with a 3-1 win over Fiorentina at the Stadio Olimpico, with former Chelsea outcast Tammy Abraham grabbing two assists on his debut. Mourinho’s men face newly promoted Salernitana on Sunday.
