However, after the interventions of Bruno Fernandes and reportedly former boss and mentor Sir Alex Ferguson, the forward agreed a two-year deal at the club where he shot to stardom as a precocious winger.

Roma boss Mourinho said: ‘The only thing I say – and it looks to me something basic and logic – is that if Juventus are happy, if Cristiano is happy and if Manchester United are happy this is the perfect business. I think there is no need to talk about Cristiano.
‘There is no need to make any comment about someone who plays, wins, scores and makes history for 20 years.’

The pair were due to lock horns in mid-October at the Allianz Stadium, with Ronaldo’s departure from Juve making him the latest big name to leave Serie A following the moves of Gianluigi Donnarumma and Romelu Lukaku to Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea respectively.
Roma opened their league account last weekend with a 3-1 win over Fiorentina at the Stadio Olimpico, with former Chelsea outcast Tammy Abraham grabbing two assists on his debut. Mourinho’s men face newly promoted Salernitana on Sunday.
