Josh Homme shares letter Anthony Bourdain wrote in 2011 to his daughter after smashing guitar

Josh Homme, lead signer of the Queens of the Stone Age, shared a special memory he had with the late Anthony Bourdain over social media on Friday.

When Homme, 45, appeared on the 13th episode of the seventh season of Bourdain’s show, No Reservations, a promotional clip was taped where Bourdain appeared to be smashing Homme’s guitar, and when the singer’s daughter, Camille, saw it, she was upset.

Bourdain, 61, heard the littler girl was bothered, and wrote her a letter to explain that it was just a stunt and to apologize, which Homme tweeted from the official Queens of the Stone Age Twitter account on Friday.

‘You apologized to a little girl who was defending her daddy. Ariane, [Bourdain’s daughter] this was your father,’ Homme wrote in the post that included an image of the letter Bourdain wrote.

Bourdain’s letter was full of references a child wouldn’t understand, but also took care to be sure the little girl, now 12 but only around four years old at the time, understood they were making television magic and he had not actually destroyed her father’s guitar.

Bourdain wrote:

‘I hear you were very upset with me after seeing the promo for this show, which I filmed recently with your Daddy and his friends. You saw me take Daddy’s guitar and smash it against a tree and I’m sure that was upsetting.’

He then explained the shot was an homage to the movie, Animal House, which Bourdain acknowledge Camille couldn’t have known about, at her tender young age.

‘Know that that was in fact, not really Daddy’s guitar, and that we were both just playing around. In real life, Daddy would have been very angry were I to do such a thing—and as he is a large man, I strongly suspect I would not still be here to write this letter,’ Bourdain said.

‘I like your Daddy very much. We are friends. Your Daddy was very nice to let me and my camera crew hang out with him all week at all his favorite places and to make totally awesome music for us,’ he added.

Bourdain even made mention of his own daughter, Ariane, who he fathered with ex-wife Ottavia Busia, in complimenting Homme’s cooking to his daughter in the letter.

‘He is a pretty good cook too—though this is something you surely know by now,’ Bourdain wrote.

‘I cook my daughter grilled cheese sandwiches. What does your Daddy cook you?’

Bourdain’s daughter, now age 11, expressed herself after the passing of her father in a performance in New York, where she wore boots Bourdain had given her.

Busia shared the photo on her Instagram account on June 11, writing a caption addressed to Bourdain:

‘Our little girl had her concert today. She was amazing. So strong and brave. She wore the boots you bought her. I hope you are having a good trip, wherever you are.’

With its obvious tongue-in-cheek tone, Homme highly valued Bourdain’s letter to his daughter, Camille.

He made this clear in his tweet on Friday, where pointed out the positive attributes he saw in Bourdain to the late chef’s dauther, Ariane.

Homme’s tweet, in its entirety, read:

‘Tony, I miss you bad. Once, Camille [Homme’s daughter] was so mad at you. She was defending me & so were you. Defending me. As we had done & would do many times over the years for each other. & you with great care, such empathy, such sweetness … you apologized to a little girl who was defending her daddy. Ariane, [Bourdain’s daughter] this was your father. Humbly yours, Joshua.’

In other parts of his letter to Homme’s daughter, Bourdain also added more adult themes.

Bourdain revealed that while ‘Daddy seems to be drinking a lot of tequila on the show,’ in actuality, ‘he never got drunk.’

‘Not that I saw anyway,’ Bourdain added.

He also shared that he liked the performer so much that had Homme not taken care of an agressive fan who showed up during taping on his own, Bourdain ‘would have broken my beer glass across the man’s skull and then jabbed the jagged remnants into his ****ing neck.’

He added, ‘That’s the kind of guy I am. I had your Daddy’s back—just like he had mine. You will learn about these things later—possibly in grammar school.’

Bourdain touched the lives of many, before his death by suicide on June 8.

He was found in his hotel room in France, where he was filming an episode of his CNN show, Parts Unknown.

Bourdain would have turned 62 years old on June 26.

Homme’s episode of No Reservations first aired on August 8, 2011.

Anthony Bourdain’s 2011 Letter to Rocker Josh Homme’s Daughter

Dear Camille,

I hear you were very upset with me after seeing the promo for this show, which I filmed recently with your Daddy and his friends. You saw me take Daddy’s guitar and smash it against a tree and I’m sure that was upsetting. That this was in fact a not so subtle homage to the early works of John Landis and John Belushi is something you could have hardly been expected to know, ANIMAL HOUSE having been released long before you were born, and I apologize.

Know that that was in fact, not really Daddy’s guitar, and that we were both just playing around. In real life, Daddy would have been very angry were I to do such a thing—and as he is a large man, I strongly suspect I would not still be here to write this letter. I like your Daddy very much. We are friends. Your Daddy was very nice to let me and my camera crew hang out with him all week at all his favorite places and to make totally awesome music for us.

I like your Daddy so much, that when an obnoxious super fan of mine at a magical place called Pappy and Harriet’s got up in Daddy’s face—had your Daddy not gently guided him by the thorax to the welcoming arms of security—I would have broken my beer glass across the man’s skull and then jabbed the jagged remnants into his ****ing neck. That’s the kind of guy I am. I had your Daddy’s back—just like he had mine. You will learn about these things later—possibly in grammar school.

When you watch the show, I hope there is nothing else in there that upsets you. You will surely see how completely brilliant Daddy is at work. You will hear a lot of great music. If you are a foodie, you will probably be terribly disappointed at the change of focus in this week’s episode, but at your tender age, I doubt that such a terrible thing as that could have befallen you. Life, for you, is still filled with hope and promise. Yes, Daddy seems to be drinking a lot of tequila on the show. But he never got drunk. Not that I saw anyway. He is a pretty good cook too—though this is something you surely know by now. I cook my daughter grilled cheese sandwiches. What does your Daddy cook you?

Sincerely,

Anthony
