Joyride suspect leads bizarre hour-long chase where cops sat still as he circled a mobile home park

Now THAT’S running circles around cops! Car thief goes on bizarre hour-long ‘chase’ with officers circling a mobile home park at just 11mph

  • California cops were led on bizarre chase around mobile home park Wednesday
  • Joyriding suspect drove as slow as 11mph while weaving between streets
  • SUV driver moved dangerously close to patrol cars during the hour-long chase
  • He finally stopped when a tire rolled off the rim due to a spike strip deployed
  • Suspect waved his arms out of the passenger side window in surrender to police
  • He was then handcuffed and arrested without incident

California police were led on a bizarre chase around a mobile home park Wednesday after a man was suspected of stealing a vehicle.

But police helicopter footage showed the cops barely had to chase the suspected car thief during the incident that took place between 9pm and 10pm as he moved at a slow 11mph and up to speeds of just 35mph.

The suspect was trapped in the complex on the dark night in El Monte near Brookside and Elliot Avenue.

Patrol cars blocked motorists from coming in and out of the park near Brookside Country Club but locals taking dogs on walks or emerging to film the action on their cells phones were a concern.

While they may not be high speeds in the grand scheme of police chases, it exceeded the limit for the residential zone.

Video footage reveals how the suspect weaved in and out of streets while law enforcement for the most part remained stationary in their vehicles.

Anticipating he would run out of gas eventually, the local cops and LAPD who had responded to the scene after receiving a report of a stolen SUV, tried multiple times to deploy spike strips but the driver simply continued.

The suspect made several erratic maneuvers during the pursuit but was eventually forced to come to a halt when the front left tire rolled off and landed in a neighbor’s yard.

It’s believed a spike strip deployed around 9.40pm caused the shredding.

During the helicopter recording – which started around 9.20pm – the suspect hurled items from the car several times but the final time something was seen coming from the window, it was to surrender.

Police are seen in the clip ordering him to back up towards them before kneeling on the ground with his hands behind his head so they could handcuff him.

ABC 7 reported he was taken into custody without incident.
