A jubilant fisherman had use his tiny fishing boat to tow in his huge catch after he was unable to reel in the 146kg monster out on the water.

It took him an hour and a half to land the supersized fish, but Josh Roberts couldn’t be prouder of his massive marlin caught between the Poor Knights and the Hen and Chicken Islands off the coast of Ruakaka on New Zealand’s North Island on Friday.

‘I’ve caught other fish but I’ve never caught a striped marlin. I’ve been targeting one for the past 10 years,’ he told Stuff.co.nz.

Mr Roberts said it was ‘pretty awesome’ to have been able to catch one after growing up immersed in a fishing and boating culture.

After a tiring battle with the marlin, the 25-year-old was able to pull it up alongside his boat only to realise there was no way it would fit inside.

He made sure to secure the fish to the side of his small vessel and made his way back to the shore before his prized catch became shark food.

Mr Roberts soon after weighed his haul only to discover it was a whopping 146 kilograms.

‘It was an epic day,’ he said.

Using his father-in-law’s smoker over two days, he has been able to gift almost 50kg of the marlin to his colleagues.

He intends on sharing more of the marlin around and the keen angler will next be hunting a broadbill swordfish.
