  • School district officials confirmed Persky’s hiring on Tuesday
  • News of Persky’s hiring sparked outrage online and in the local community

  • Persky presided over the criminal case against former Stanford University student athlete Brock Turner who was found guilty of sexually assault in 2016
  • The former judge ultimately issued a six month jail sentence for Turner who only ended up serving three months behind bars
  • California voters issued a recall of Persky on June 5, 2018

A San Jose, California school district has decided to part ways with Aaron Persky just a day after confirming they had hired the disgraced former judge as a junior varsity girls tennis coach over the summer.

Persky’s new role was to shape the minds and athletic careers of young girls at Lynbrook High School in West San Jose.

It was his first job since Santa Clara County voters removed him from office for sentencing college swimmer Brock Turner to just six months in jail after Turner was found guilty of sexually assaulting an unconscious girl behind a dumpster in 2015.

‘Effective September 11, 2019, Mr. Persky’s employment with the District as the Junior Varsity Girls Tennis coach has ended,’ Fremont Union High School District spokesperson Rachel Zlotziver told DailyMail.com via email Wednesday night.

‘We believe this outcome is in the best interest of our students and school community.’

Zlotziver would not confirm whether Persky quit his position or was fired. A school district spokeswoman told the Washington Post that Persky’s connection to the Turner case was ‘brought to our attention’ last week.

‘I cannot comment any further, as this is a personnel matter,’ Zlotziver said.

News of the ex-judge’s new position sparked outrage online and in the local community.

Several national media outlets ran stories about Persky’s coaching position on Wednesday after it was reported on DailyMail.com the night before.

Fremont, California resident Neha Palvai started a Change.org position calling for Persky to be fired. In less than two days, it has received more than 1,000 signatures.

‘By hiring Persky as the FEMALE teams’ tennis coach, the Lynbrook [high school, the school district], and Santa Clara County administrations are explicitly and ignorantly allowing rape culture to ensue,’ Palvai argued in the petition’s text.

Zlotziver said the school district  will immediately start searching for a new coach ‘with the goal of ensuring that the athletes on the JV tennis team are able to have a successful season.’

Both the Lynbrook and District staff will be supporting the team and their families throughout this transition,’ she said. ‘Please know that we are deeply committed to maintaining an effective, safe, and positive environment for all students.’
