The myth of Anna Delvey will unravel in the upcoming miniseries Inventing Anna.
Netflix teased the Shonda Rhimes-created show online Monday, offering a peek at the con-artist and how she scammed her way into a life of luxury with the first trailer.
In the clip, journalist Vivian (played by Anna Chlumsky) tries to unpack the mystery – and grift – behind the fake German heiress, who is played by Julia Garner of Ozark fame.

After showing a montage of Anna enjoying the finer things – like fashion shows, posh lunches and resort vacations – the trailer cuts to Vivian researching the socialite, who reportedly scammed friends out of thousands of dollars under a fake identity.
But as Vivian’s story goes to press, authorities track Delvey – born Anna Sorokin – down themselves.

The nine-episode saga of Inventing Anna is based on the true story of Anna Sorokin, AKA Delvey.

Sorokin, a Russian immigrant from a working-class background who moved to Germany with her family as a teen, initially began using the invented surname Delvey after moving to Paris to work at a fashion magazine.
She kept the name when she moved to the United States and reinvented herself as a German heiress, who adopted a life of luxury sustained by fraudulent loan requests.
The con artist would also use her well-heeled friends for money by taking them on trips on her dime, before asking them to pay.

One of Sorokin’s traveling companions, Rachel DeLoache Williams, revealed in Vanity Fair in 2018 how her fake friend convinced her to put a $62,000 bill on her credit card, plus other expenses.
She claimed to Williams that she would wire the money to her once they were back home, but it never materialized.
Sorokin was indicted in 2017 and convicted in 2019 of eight charges, including second-degree grand larceny, attempted grand larceny, and theft of services, though the jury reached a not guilty verdict on the larceny charge for failing to pay back Williams.
The convicted fraudster was released from prison in February of this year, only to be taken into custody by Immigrant and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for overstaying her visa.

She’s expected to be deported back to Germany, though she was still in ICE custody as of late September.
Along with Garner and Chlumsky, Inventing Anna features Laverne Cox, Katie Lowes, Alexis Floyd, and Anders Holm.
It is the first series Rhimes has written, created and run since the end of Scandal in 2018.
Inventing Anna comes out February 11 2022.
