Julia Gillard’s Melbourne home featuring bollards to prevent terror attacks sells for $1.26million

Ex PM Julia Gillard’s home sells for $1.2million – despite a VERY unusual feature designed to prevent a terror attack in the front yard

  • Julia Gillard’s former home fetched $1.26million at an auction over the weekend
  • The property went for $80,000 above the top end of the vendor’s expectations
  • The home’s front yard is lined with red bollards to prevent vehicle attacks
  • They were installed by the Federal Police when Gillard became Prime Minister
  • Gillard owned the home from 1998 until 2013 but the bollards remain to this day

A modest suburban home once owned by former prime minister Julia Gillard that features a series of red bollards designed to prevent ‘vehicle attacks’ has sold for $1.26million.

The three-bedroom Melbourne home went for $80,000 above the top end of the vendor’s $1.08m to $1.18m price guide at an auction over the weekend.

Red bollards line the front yard and appear to be quirky décor additions to passers-by but were installed on the property by the Australian Federal Police for extra security when Ms Gillard became a high-profile politician.

While the ex PM sold the property almost a decade ago, the red bollards are still a feature of the home today.

The understated home in the suburb of Altona, 25 minutes southwest of the Melbourne CBD, was owned by the former politician from 1998 until 2013 right after a leadership spill that saw her lose the prime ministership to Kevin Rudd.

Ms Gillard bought the home for just $140,000 in 1998 and sold it $220,000 above the asking price for $921,000 14 years later by auction.

Agent Elle Zhu from Levin Group Docklands told realestate.com.au, the ‘special’ house is a ‘part of history’.

‘Apparently Julia and her colleagues would have meetings in the loungeroom sometimes, so it is like a small Parliament,’ she said.

The property was bought from Ms Gillard in 2013 by Zheng Wang as a gift to his wife Jain and the couple had used it as a gathering place for friends and family.

Mr and Ms Wang, who are fans of the former PM and even bought similar furniture to what she had in the home, sold the property as they have been spending more time overseas with their daughter and grandson.
