Julianne Hough and Shirley Ballas pick up Christmas feast

Along with her brother Derek Hough, she counts Shirley Ballas as a key mentor, having lived with the star for ten years as she studied dance in London.

So it was only natural that Julianne Hough and her family opted to spend Christmas with the formidable Strictly Come Dancing judge on Monday.

Early in the day, Julianne, 29, and Shirley, 57, were spotted making their way out of a Los Angeles Whole Foods with a trolley full of groceries – including a variety of beverages – as they prepared to celebrate the holiday together.

Utah native Julianne cut a chic figure for the low-key excursion, wearing s flowing grey blouse with a high neckline, which she tucked into a pleated cream skirt.

Standing tall in a pair of strappy heels, she accessorised with a stylish taupe leather handbag, while she wore her curly blonde locks in a half updo.

Boasting an immaculate mani-pedi, the Dancing With The Stars champ-turned-judge looked relaxed and happy as she chatted away with Shirley, who also looked stylish.

With a pair of red-rimmed glasses resting atop her wavy raven tresses, the British star wore a flattering red jacket with black fitted trousers and knee-high boots.

Complementing her ensemble with a black quilted leather handbag and a patterned scarf, she took control of the shopping cart as she made her way into the parking lot.

Hours after their shopping trip, Julianne took to Twitter to share a video of herself celebrating Christmas with her family – including her new husband Brooks Laich, 34.

In a images shared on Instagram, Julianne and Los Angeles Kings ice hockey player Brooks, who tied the knot in July, were seen wearing Santa hats as they posed up a storm for the cameras while embracing the festive spirit.

In a gushing post, Julianne wrote that 2017 had been ‘absolutely incredible’ for the couple, adding: ‘Brooks and I have been so happy and humbled to share our love with all of you, in hopes that you feel our love for each other and for all of you, and know that everyone can have a happiness that is pure and strong!’

She added: ‘OK, I’m super sappy because my heart is overflowing with gratitude and love for my husband, my family, my friends and for humanity.

‘Sending PEACE and love to everyone on this planet! I love you, I love you, I love you!! Hear that and know that!’

While they enjoy a great relationship with Shirley, Julianne and Derek were cared for with a stern hand during the decade they spent living with her in the English capital.

Derek, who lived with Shirley and her then-husband Corky Ballas as she coached them, recalled: ‘She raised her hand and slapped it hard across my cheek. I swear I almost swallowed my teeth.’

Writing in his book Taking The Lead: Lessons From A Life In Motion, which was first published back in 2014, the 32-year-old Dancing With The Stars professional added: ‘That was the day I learned never to lie to Shirley.’

Derek remains close to Shirley, whose dancer son Mark Ballas is pal, and took to Instagram earlier this year to heap praise on the ballroom veteran after her Strictly appointment was announced.

Sharing an official headshot of Shirley, he gushed: ‘One of, if not the most qualified dance icons to ever grace the judging desk.

‘Not only one of the most iconic female champions of ALL TIME, but a celebrated coach and mentor to the top competitors of the world.

‘I’ve never seen anyone less entitled, consistently hard working and just genuinely brilliant at what they do than Shirley Ballas. Her knowledge and passion for dance is unprecedented!!! I can’t think of anyone more deserving. Extremely excited!’
