  • The country town of Junee is in lock down with several streets closed off
  • A heavy police and paramedic presence surrounds the Locomotive Hotel
  • The man who barricaded himself inside the hotel is now scouring the rooftop
  • Parents from the Junee Public School have picked up their children

A country town has been in lock down for 13 hours after a man, who is believed to be armed with a machete, refuses to come down from the roof of a local pub.

Several streets in Junee, a town in the Riverina region of NSW, have been closed off for much of the day as police continue to negotiate with the man.

He originally barricaded himself inside the hotel before deciding to head up to the roof, where he has been pacing since 6pm.

There is a large police and paramedic presence in the area and specifically surrounding the Locomotive Hotel on Hill Street, Nine News reports.

The siege allegedly began at 10am on Tuesday.

Footage obtained by Nine News shows the man, dressed in denim jeans and a black t-shirt pacing along the rooftop with a large knife in his hand.

It is understood negotiators are trying to talk the man into coming down from the roof as they speak to him from the road.

Junee Public School, which is across the road from the hotel, was also placed in lock down but parents have since picked up their children.
