Jurgen Klopp: Frustration took hold in reacting to fan

  • The German admitted he should not have responded but said it felt good
  • Reds manager was frustrated as supporter continually heckled him during game
  • He said: ‘I’m sure I’m not the first manager to have a problem with him’

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp admitted frustration had got the better of him as the Reds saw their 18-game unbeaten run come to an end in Swansea.

Alfie Mawson’s header proved to be the game’s only goal and Klopp was involved in a heated war of words with one home fan at the full-time whistle.

Swansea had just 28 per cent of possession and Liverpool managed 21 shots on goal. The statistics only pointed to one result, but crucially the visitors couldn’t find the back of the net.

Jurgen Klopp admitted it felt good to react to the provocation of one Swansea fan

On the incident at the end of the game, Klopp said: ‘He was shouting at me and I reacted one time.

‘I have to remind myself I’m a human being. Nobody could hear what he said and I have no problem with it, but there was just one moment when I thought it was enough. It felt quite good.

‘I’m sure I’m not the first manager to have a problem with him. I should not react, but I didn’t say anything bad. I only made it clear I wasn’t happy with what he said.’

Roberto Firmino’s header in four minutes of added time, one which struck the post, summed up Liverpool’s night of frustration as they lost track on Chelsea and Manchester United above them.

Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Firmino had an off-night in South Wales as Swansea produced an impressive backs-to-the-wall display at the Liberty Stadium.

Mawson was the match winner, slotting home a loose ball just before the break after Liverpool’s £75million man Virgil van Dijk had failed to clear a Sam Clucas corner.

Klopp admitted his team didn’t deserve to take anything from the game.

‘I’m more frustrated with the performance than the result and I’m angry because it was not a good game,’ the German said. We lost the match in the first half. We didn’t do what we wanted to do.

‘It hasn’t happened too often so I didn’t expect that and I was quite surprised. We had a chance right at the end, but if we had got a point it would still have been a bad game for us.

While Liverpool were left to contemplate how on earth they didn’t find the net, it was a night of pure elation for Swansea and manager Carlos Carvalhal.

There hasn’t been much to cheer at the Liberty Stadium this season, but this felt like the sort of result which could yet change the Welsh side’s season.

Swansea rode their luck at times and are still bottom, but they showed remarkable resilience to hold on against all the odds. Just three points now separate the division’s lowest six clubs.
