‘Just imagine you after a quiet lunch’: Karl Stefanovic SQUIRMS as Neil Mitchell brings up Ubergate

It was the scandal that rocked Australian TV, and landed brothers Karl and Peter Stefanovic in hot water with their Channel Nine colleagues.

And the old wounds of Ubergate were re-opened on Friday when 3AW radio host Neil Mitchell made reference to the scandal while being interviewed by Karl during a live Today show segment.

Speaking about UberPool, a new carpool service launched by the ridesharing app, Karl said it would not work because people would ‘end up killing each other’.

Neil then replied: ‘They will – just imagine you after a quiet lunch.’

‘And in an Uber with six other people, chatting happily – you couldn’t make phone calls… you couldn’t ring your brother and have a chat,’ he added.

Clearly uncomfortable with the direction the conversation was heading, Karl said: ‘Exactly. Nothing. Can’t be trusted.

‘There’s no way I want to go in a little car with six other people that you work with… Imagine that.’

‘We’ve all been to long lunches,’ joked Neil, making an apparent reference to alcohol consumption.

‘I’d go with Dickie [Today presenter Richard Wilkins], that’s it,’ Karl said hastily.

In March, Karl and Peter had discussed several of their Channel Nine colleagues, including co-anchor Georgie Gardner, after an ‘intoxicated’ Peter called Karl on speakerphone during an Uber ride.

'And in an Uber with six other people, chatting happily - you couldn’t make phone calls … You couldn’t ring your brother and have a chat,' Neil said

Karl, 43, had allegedly made ‘b****y’ comments about Georgie, 48, saying she ‘didn’t have enough opinions’ and that she needed to ‘step up… if she wanted to stay on the show’.

The Uber driver apparently ‘overheard’ the discussion and later sold details of what was said to New Idea. (He denied secretly recording the conversation).

There have been reports of simmering tensions on the set of Today ever since.
