‘Just look at our captain! State of this club’: Harry Maguire is mocked by Man United fans after lining up on the WRONG side of the tunnel at Old Trafford ahead of embarrassing opening day Brighton defeat

  • Harry Maguire lined-up on the wrong side of the tunnel for Brighton defeat
  • The Manchester United captain had to get the teams to swap before kick off
  • United now line up on the left of the tunnel when playing at Old Trafford

Manchester United players had to change sides with Brighton in the famous Old Trafford tunnel just moments before kick off as captain Harry Maguire appeared to get confused with what side players should line up on.

In a video posted on social media, Maguire was seen originally getting his players to line up on the right of the tunnel before a conversation with goalkeeper David De Gea appeared to change his mind.

De Ge pointed to where the Brighton team has lined up and suggested to a confused looking Maguire that it should be the home side that stands on the left side of the walkway.

Maguire then swaps places with Brighton players

Maguire in agreement with his goalkeeper then moved into the position occupied by Brighton captain Lewis Dunk, who swapped places with the England international.

The rest of the two teams eventually clocked on and swapped places as well before making the walk out onto the pitch.

Sky Sports pundit and Manchester United legend Gary Neville was involved in a similar situation when playing against Manchester City in 2002 after team-mate-turned-opponent Peter Schmeichel went to shake his hand as he asked Neville to change sides in the Maine Road tunnel.

Neville did so but ignored the City goalkeeper’s handshake with no love lost between the cross-city rivals.

Earlier in the week, new United boss Erik ten Hag asked for the home and away dugouts to be changed over with the home side now sitting closer to the Stretford End.

This is now replicated in the tunnel, something that Maguire seemed to momentarily forget as United got their Premier League season underway.

Ten Hag’s demands for perfection, however, didn’t seem to be replicated on the pitch with the star players failing to match the expectations of those in attendance, including Manchester United owner Avram Glazer.

United lost at home to Brighton for the first time ever in the club’s history, with Graham Potter’s side producing a strong performance despite having lost a host of players over the summer.

Maguire was one of the many underperforming United starters that failed to inspire confidence as the new Premier League season kicked off.

The centre-back was made a scapegoat for a lot of frustration from United fans last season and has been targeted again following the recent defeat, with many calling for him to be dropped for World Cup and serial Champions League winner Raphael Varane.
