Juventus defender Daniele Rugani’s wife said she is ‘infinitely scared’ after revealing they are expecting a child with both parents testing positive for the coronavirus.

Italy defender Rugani’s partner Michela Persico made the shocking revelation during an interview with Italian magazine ‘Chi’ after the couple tested positive for COVID-19.

Rugani, 25, was one of the first Italian footballers to test positive for the virus as Serie A is on suspension until further notice due to the pandemic. 

Persico, who is a well-known sports presenter in Italy, said ‘doctors have assured me that there should not be any problems, but put yourself my shoes. I am infinitely scared’.

She also revealed: ‘Rugani and I are expecting a child I’m afraid. I still cannot speak about it. For now, I have to grasp what comes next. I hope the virus does not affect my pregnancy.’ 

Chinese agency Xinhua reported a baby, born on February 2 in the city of Wuhan where the virus was discovered, tested positive for COVID-19 just 30 hours after birth.

The child was reportedly stable and under observation however, the newborn’s current state is unclear.

The Italian presenter also spoke how they realised they had the virus saying: ‘Daniele had no symptoms and then suddenly, he had a fever out of nowhere and the testing began. He is fine.’

When speaking about her own health Persico said: ‘I have no symptoms. I am lonely when I cannot see anybody. But that is what I will do.’  

On Monday Rugani has said that he is feeling better and that he was recovering well.

Italy is in full lockdown as the virus continues to spiral out of control and as a result Serie A matches have been suspended. 

Seven players from the Italian top flight have now tested positive.

The severity of the outbreak in Italy saw football suspended on March 11 by the Italian government.

Yesterday Italy recorded the largest rise in virus deaths in one day when it recorded 475 fatalities, taking the total to nearly 3,000.

Italy is the world’s worst affected country after China, where the virus originated, and has seen more than 35,000 confirmed cases. 

The virus has claimed the lives of a reported 2,978 people after 35,713 confirmed cases in Italy making it the second-most affected country by the virus after mainland China.

There have been a reported 211,211 worldwide cases leading to 8,847 deaths.
