Kansas councilwoman Carol Fowler allegedly bit down so hard on a correction officer’s thumb that she broke the bone
A small-town Kansas councilwoman is behind bars after she bit down so hard on a correction officer’s thumb that she broke the bone, police said.
Carol Fowler has allegedly been putting up a fight from the moment police first tried to take her into custody last week.
Fowler, a city council member for the town of Huron, was arrested for failing to show up in court for an outstanding warrant.
The councilwoman had been charged in December for being a pedestrian under the influence and interfering with law enforcement.
But Fowler refused to comply when police showed up at her door on June 29, allegedly hitting, kicking, and scratching them before one officer Tasered her.
Two of the officers suffered superficial injuries from the fight but did not require medical care, Atchison County Sheriff Jack Laurie told the Atchison Globe.
The problems only continued on June 2, when officers attempted to complete the booking process at the Atchison County Jail.
Fowler allegedly refused to cooperate and a fight broke out as officers tried to remove her jewelry and personal items.
‘They had five officers in there and it was a struggle for all them to get her to comply,’ Laurie told MSC News.
‘She was able to get a hold of one of the correction officer’s thumbs with her teeth and actually broke the bone in his thumb.’

Both the officer and another deputy had to go to the hospital for medical attention after the fight, according to Laurie.
The officer’s thumb will need ongoing treatment.
Fowler has been charged with three felony counts of battery on a law enforcement officer for both incidents, as well as a misdemeanor count of battery on a law enforcement officer and interfering with law enforcement.
The councilwoman was supposed to appear in court on Monday but it has been rescheduled due to her emotional and physical condition.
She is currently being held on $25,343 bond and is expected to appear in court on June 16.
Fowler is one of five city council members in Huron, which has a population of 73 people.
She won a seat on the council after winning two votes in a November 2017 election. Her term began in January.
Fowler remains listed as a member of the city council as of Wednesday.
