The Chiefs are turning to a familiar face in the wake of Isiah Pacheco’s fractured fibula, with the franchise reportedly set to host former running back Kareem Hunt for a visit.
Pacheco, the team’s starter in the backfield, got injured in Kansas City’s win over the Bengals on Sunday and will miss at least six weeks, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
And following that blow, Hunt will visit his ex-team on Tuesday according to multiple reports, as the Chiefs explore options to replace Pacheco in the short team.
The Chiefs also have rookie Carson Steele and veteran Samaje Perine on the depth chart behind Pacheco.
The potential reunion with Hunt comes six years after the team cut him when a surveillance video published by TMZ in November 2018 showed him kicking and pushing a woman in a hotel.
Kareem Hunt could return to the Kansas City Chiefs six years after the team released him
Hunt landed with the Cleveland Browns and spent four years there mostly as a backup
Hunt was not charged by police but was later suspended for eight games of the 2018 season.
He would later apologize for his actions, and admitted he wasn’t truthful with the Chiefs after the incident came to light.
‘Honestly, I just want to let the world know how sorry I am for my actions,’ Hunt told ESPN.
‘It’s been a tough time for me. I am extremely embarrassed because of that video. … The video shows I was in the wrong. I’m not that type of person. I’m really just disappointed and embarrassed for myself and for my family. I’m really taking action to learn from this and do everything possible to become a better man.’
He continued, ‘The Chiefs are right. I didn’t tell them everything and I don’t blame them for anything. My actions caused this. I really wish I could just apologize to them and let them know it’s no hard feelings between me and the Chiefs. I love the program. I love the people there. I just want to take this time and better myself and not let anything like this ever happen again.’
While Hunt was let go by the Chiefs, he landed with the Cleveland Browns months later in early 2019, and spent four years with the team mostly in a backup capacity before the sides parted ways this summer.
Hunt, a third-round pick out of Toledo, was a star in Kansas City as a rookie as he ran for 1,327 yards and earned a Pro Bowl selection.
