Kate Garraway was moved to tears during Piers Morgan’s final edition of Life Stories after being reunited with an anniversary card from her ailing husband.

The Good Morning Britain presenter, 54, made an emotional appearance on the confessional ITV show before taking over from Morgan, who is stepping down after 11-years as host.

The pair, GMB colleagues before Morgan’s abrupt departure in March, discussed at length Kate’s round the clock care for husband Derek Draper as he slowly recovers from COVID-19.

Former political advisor Derek was rushed to hospital after falling gravely ill with the highly infectious respiratory virus as it swept across the United Kingdom in March 2020.

And Kate struggled to contain her emotions after Morgan presented her with an anniversary card, handwritten by her stricken husband as he continues his recovery at the family’s north London home.

The presenter explained how their two children, Darcy, 15, and Billy, 11, had bought a card on Derek’s behalf from a local shop ahead of the couple’s 16th wedding anniversary in September.

Opening the card, upon which the words ‘So proud of you’ were visible, Morgan revealed the handwritten message: ‘Very proud. Love Derek x.’

Attempting to respond through her tears, Kate said: ‘Well, I’m very proud of him.’

With their children watching from the studio audience, Kate revealed she feels ‘very lonely’ and admitted she misses the husband she married in 2005.

She said: ‘There are lots of moments of joy in that, recognition, moments with the children where he definitely knows what they’re saying to him and remembers things.

‘But there is no way of knowing what the future is and in the meantime, it’s a strange thing Piers…’

She added: ‘I want him there and I want him back, but some days his presence reminds me the absence, so you can feel very lonely.

‘I feel like I just want to talk to Derek. Even though I believe he’s there, he can’t be there in that same way. I love him more than ever by the way.’
