Tennis fan Kate Middleton marks what should have been the first day of Wimbledon by narrating a short Instagram film saying the return to SW19 will be ‘worth the wait’

The Duchess of Cambridge has narrated a short social media film to mark what would have been the first day of Wimbledon.
Kate, 38, provided the voice over for a minute-long video shared on the Wimbledon Instagram account this morning, in which she promises that the return to SW19 will be ‘worth the wait’.
As an avid tennis fan and patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, Kate is a regular fixture at the two-week long tournament and no doubt would have been looking forward to this year’s event.

Wimbledon has been cancelled for the first time since the Second World War due to the coronavirus pandemic.
In the voiceover, Kate says: ‘350 days, 14 hours and 12 minutes between the last ball hit and when the next was meant to be.
‘Over the years your support has shaped this historic event. No matter the time of day or the names on the scoreboard, you have always been there, come rain or shine.
‘This year sadly though things are very different, but we will bide our time until we sit on the edge of our seats again and celebrate again. So, when the time is right and we open the gates, we will be back again and it will have been worth the wait.’
The moving narration is accompanied by a series of images capturing the crowds and sports stars that light up the tennis tournament.

It opens with a photo of Kate presenting the trophy during one prize ceremony.
The Duchess of Cambridge took over as patron of the AELTC in 2016 after the Queen stepped down after 64 years in the role.
Even before joining the royal family Kate was often seen at Wimbledon and has continued the tradition in recent years.
In 2018 Kate made her first joint appearance with the Duchess of Sussex at the tournament, where they watched Meghan’s close friend Serena Williams on Centre Court.
The sisters-in-law repeated the appearance last year, alongside Kate’s sister Pippa Middleton.
