Last year, the Duchess of Cambridge celebrated her 37th birthday with a family tea party at Kensington Palace, it was reported.

The royal is said to have wanted to keep the festivities low-key, opting for just a small gathering with her children, Prince George, six, Princess Charlotte, four and Prince Louis, one.

While husband William was busy with an engagement earlier in the day, he made it back home in time to join in the fun.

The mother-of-three is thought to have enjoyed a birthday cake and been given presents.

Speaking ahead of the day, a source told Vanity Fair: ‘Kate’s not into big birthday celebrations, but [Prince] George and [Princess] Charlotte adore birthday cake, so there will be a special tea party at the Palace with candles and presents.’

The Duke of Cambridge spent part of the day at Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel, where he marked 30 years of the London Air Ambulance service.
