Kate Somerville details her five skincare do’s for the face

Skincare expert Kate Somerville has revealed the five most important things that people need to employ in their beauty routines, while detailing the steps and ingredients that should always be limited during the summer months.

The renowned celebrity esthetician — who’s worked with Jessica Alba, Kate Hudson and Eva Mendes — transformed her clients’ skin and since launched her own skincare line to help people achieve a healthy glow at home. Now Somerville has unveiled her five top do’s that people can follow in their own routines.

‘If you do these five daily do’s, you’re going to have really healthy skin for a lifetime,’ Somerville told DailyMail.com.

The first recommendation for her daily do’s involves cleansing to help purify the skin from any impurities on the surface.

‘Then I really believe in exfoliation, twice a week,’ Somerville advises as the second tip.

In the summer, though, her second skincare tip alters slightly to protect the barrier when it is out in the sun.

Five steps that will give you ‘healthy skin for a lifetime’

  • Cleanse
  • Exfoliate
  • Hydrate
  • Moisturize
  • Sun protection

‘Don’t exfoliate as deeply,’ she said. ‘I just have everyone slow down on their exfoliation.’

People with more sensitive skin can reduce the amount they exfoliate to just once a week if they anticipate being out in the sun more.

Following the exfoliating step in the skincare routine, Somerville recommends prioritizing both hydration and moisturizing daily.

And while she confessed these two steps sound similar, the skincare expert said it is important to separate them when it comes to selecting products for the routine.

‘I believe in hydration…that’s your hyaluronic acid,’ Somerville explained. ‘That’s going to give you that bounce in the skin.’

She compared this step to a leather belt. If the leather gets dried out, it will then crack and form crevices throughout the material.

The skin on the face is the same way.

‘If [our skin] is dry and dehydrated, that is when you are going to get a lot of lines, Somerville said. ‘So I really believe that hydration step.’

Applying a hyaluronic acid to the skin before the moisturizer will help the product penetrate deep into the pores, specifically targeting any dehydrated areas in the face. People should then seal that hydration with a moisturizer.

‘That is where you can really add in treatments like retinol, vitamin C, peptides, to really target your specific concerns,’ Somerville said about the moisturization phase.

Her final do is to apply sunscreen at the end of a morning skincare routine to best protect against ultraviolet rays.

But Somerville’s advice for clients will alter slightly during the summer months because people tend to spend more time out in the sun.

‘I really have them back off of glycolic [acid], any kind of deeper peel,’ she said when asked what ingredients people should avoid.

Retin A in high doses is another ingredient Somerville recommends for clients to limit when they are expecting to be out in the sun for long periods of time.

‘Just make sure you don’t do it the day before,’ she said, adding: ‘If you are, you really need to wear a 50 SPF. You need to reapply. I think you need to wear a hat. You’re going to have to be really cautious with the kind of sun exposure you’re going to get.’

Vitamin C is one ingredient Somerville recommends clients increase during the summer months.

This comes after Somerville and her team launched her new Retinol Vitamin C Moisturizer ($90), which combines both retinol and vitamin C to promote cell turnover in the skin and brightening.

‘It is a gentle retinol,’ Somerville said about the new product. ‘It is not going to cause intense redness, flaking. [The moisturizer] goes in gently, but it does what it is supposed to do by promoting cell turnover quickly. Vitamin C will then brighten the skin.’
