Katherine Heigl reveals how she had to leave Los Angeles for Utah to raise her three kids

While Katherine Heigl still continues to work in movies and television, the actress has spent the past decade-plus raising her family in Utah.

The 44-year-old actress actually tied the knot with her singer husband Josh Kelley in Park City, Utah in 2007, and just a few years later she moved her family to a Utah ranch.

Heigl – who recently opened a Shopify store with proceeds to benefit animal welfare charities – opened up in an interview with E! about why she had to leave Hollywood to raise her kids… and how she’s still pining for a sequel to her 2008 film 27 Dresses.

‘I hustled in Hollywood for 20 years and it was really important to me to find a place of solitude and solace,’ Heigl said.

‘I didn’t know how to raise them in L.A., so I felt like I could do it here. I could be more on top of things that scare me and I could be more on top of the kinds of friends they have and places they’re going, the kind of activities they’re involved in—and what the hell they’re doing on their phones!’ Heigl said.

She also opened up about the possibility of a sequel to 2008’s 27 Dresses, adding, ‘I would kill to do a 27 Dresses sequel. We’re talking a little bit about it, so, we’ll see.’

The actress currently stars alongside Sarah Chalke in the Netflix series Firefly Lane, though the streaming service recently confirmed the second half of the second season (debuting April 27) will bring the show to an end.

With her show coming to an end, Heigl was asked if this would be the time to expand her family – Naleigh, 14, Adelaide, 10 and Joshua, 6 – even more, though she’s done having kids.

‘That’s a hard no. I thought for sure I wanted one more, and it was quarantine that I realized, no. Three is plenty,’ Heigl explained.

Their Utah home also includes eight dogs and three cats, with the actress revealing that more pets are also off the table.

‘As far as dogs, if I bring one more animal into this home, my husband will leave me and I’m alone with eight dogs, three cats and three children, so we really need to avoid that,’ Heigl joked.

She also spoke about her dog nutrition brand Badlands Ranch, which she launched last summer.

‘I’m really into herbology and holistic health and naturopathy and I said, “Is there a way to incorporate that into the dog food?”‘ Heigl explained.

‘So we worked with pet nutritionists and holistic vets and created this brand that I’m really proud of and really believe in,’ Heigl said.

She also opened up about ‘compartmentalizing’ her life, which included leaving her kids in Utah when she had to film Firefly Lane in Vancouver.

‘I can’t easily anymore take them out of school systems and put them into whole new cities and environments. I had to live with that aspect of what I do for work, I have to leave my family,’ she said.

Heigl added that when she is at work, she is, ‘hyper-focused’ on her work on the set, though she does find time to call her kids, though not every day.

‘I call the kids probably two, three nights a week. I’m not FaceTiming every day—I’m at work, having crap cell service or terrible WiFi. You have to be able to let it go,’ she said.

She joked, ‘I’m sure I’ll be paying for their therapy, and mine,’ adding that when she’s at home, she doesn’t focus on work.

‘My manager, my agent, my lawyer, they’re all like, “Hey, you should probably read that script we sent you two weeks ago…”‘ Heigl said.

‘I’m like, “Right, right, right, right…” I just hyper-focus on the world I’m in now,’ she added.
