Katie Price runs London Marathon in a lung costume for ill mother

Katie Price was unable to complete the London Marathon on Sunday – and was instead spotted having lunch with her terminally ill mother Amy while others completed the 26.2 mile run.

The 39-year-old TV personality, who was raising money for the British Lung Foundation, was forced to quit with a knee injury and her giant lung costume was therefore carried to the finish line by police, three hours into the race.

Fans noticed that Katie had dropped out early when she was seen having tea with her mother, whose terminal lung illness was the motivation for her to take part for a second time.

Katie disappeared from the race’s live tracker and reappeared on Instagram Stories at 6pm, eating an ice cream with ‘family’.

Confirming that Katie had pulled out, Amy shared a congratulatory message with Katie, in which she defended the star for pulling out and explained how proud she felt for the awareness her daughter had raised for lung conditions.

‘I just wanted to say how proud I am of my daughter Katie for running the London Marathon,’ Amy said. ‘She may not have completed it but she’s raised so much awareness, it’s been worth it for the British Lung Foundation.’

Katie wasn’t the only runner to struggle with Sunday’s race since the 38th edition of the world-famous race was the hottest on record, with temperatures of 23.2C recorded.

Many exhausted competitors collapsed to the ground after running the 26.2 mile course in the sweltering heat, while others stood in front of fans as they desperately tried to cool down.

Mobile water stations had to be dispatched to provide runners with water after stations between miles eight and ten ran out. 40,000 runners took part in total.

Earlier in the day, fans on Instagram questionned if Katie had pulled out of the challenge after she disappeared from the marathon’s race tracker when it suggested she should be finished the course at 6:44pm.

One fan wrote: ‘She hasn’t been running since 12:43, been tracking her on the London Marathon App and she’s stopped at 15k and not moved. Looks like she’s dropped out again?’

A followers commented: ‘I have the London Marathon App which has tracked everyone else fine, she stopped at 15k and not been moving since 12:43. Thins she’s not in it now?’.

MailOnline has contacted Katie’s representatives for comment.

Katie previously ran the London Marathon in 2009. She completed the course despite suffering a devastating miscarriage just days before and this week recalled how she was ‘bleeding the whole way through’.

The star – who was married to Peter Andre at the time – had previously said that she ‘didn’t want to let anyone down’ when she ran the course a mere few days after discovering that her fourth child’s heartbeat had stopped.

That time, Katie was running the marathon with then-husband Peter to raise money for charities relating to her disabled eldest son Harvey’s Prada Willi syndrome.

Katie said she was in a lot of danger by finishing the 2009 marathon while bleeding.

She told Piers Morgan on a TV show shortly afterwards: ‘It’s dangerous to run when you’re bleeding that much. You can get a blood clot and I thought, “I can’t let anyone down”.

‘So, even the day of the marathon I’m running along, I keep going to the toilet because I keep checking to see if I’m bleeding and stuff. And then obviously my knee goes and I’m thinking of Harvey.

‘I’m trying to keep myself together, not to cry. I just wanted to say to people, “Just leave me alone, I’ve, I’ve just lost a baby, I’m bleeding, I’m trying to run, I’m trying my best,” but I can’t say it because, you know, it’s private.’

Katie was still worried about the strength of her knees when she returned to run the London Marathon this weekend, nine years on.

In an interview with Heat Magazine this week, she said: ‘I haven’t gone the distance I did before [in training], because my knees are damaged… But I’d rather save my strength for marathon day.’

Speaking to The Mirror earlier this week, Katie insisted that she would do anything to cross the finishing line no matter what happened during the course of the race.

She shared: ‘If I collapse, I better f***ing get up again. But even if I end up having to crawl, I will get over that line. Whatever has gone on in my life this year, I’ll put that aside on the day.’

The Loose Women panelist added that her ultimate motivation was seeing her mother’s face at the finish line.

The brunette beauty is raising money for the British Lung Foundation with hopes to increase awareness of Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) – which scars sufferer’s lungs.

After running in aid of charities to support her autistic son Harvey in 2009, this year Katie is raising money for the British Lung Foundation while hopes to raise awareness of IPF – which scars sufferer’s lungs.

Katie – who has currently raised £1,320 of her £2,000 target – showcased her sporty side as she wore gym leggings, a blue t-shirt with a pair of shorts.

Shortly before her appearance, the star broadcast an Instagram Live video featuring a group of teenagers, in which she seemingly gave the youngsters sex advice.

According to The Sun, Katie introduced the crowd to her Instagram fans: ‘Hi guys, these are all like my kids’ ages!’

‘Tell the truth kids…have I not educated you more than your teachers about…?’ ‘Sex education’, the kids shouted.

Clearly content with her commitment to the race, Katie’s mother Amy told The Sun: ‘I am so proud of Katie, the last few months have been a rollercoaster ride for my family.’

‘The main thing is that we raise awareness of what is a much-neglected health area, so the people with the power to do something take notice and act- I have a terminal lung condition that took far too long to be diagnosed.

‘Everyone who runs the London Marathon does it for their own personal reasons and the journey they’ve been on, it means something to everyone and for Kate it’s about me.’

Katie recently admitted she can’t contemplate life without her mother.
