Keanu Reeves drops out of Devil In The White City series produced by Leonardo DiCaprio

Producers for the upcoming limited series, Devil In The White City, are on the hunt for a new leading man once again.

Deadline is reporting that Keanu Reeves, who was announced to be attached to the Hulu production in August, will no longer star in the series adaption.

So far there’s no official word on what prompted his departure from the drama that’s being produced by Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese.

Based on the  2003 book of the same name by Erik Larson, Devil In The White City tells the true story of ‘Daniel H. Burnham, a demanding but visionary architect who races to make his mark on history with the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair.

The storyline also revolves around Dr. H. H. Holmes, America’s first modern serial killer and the man behind the notorious ‘Murder Castle’ built in the Fair’s shadow. 

The series would have been Reeves’ first major U.S. television role in his illustrious career.

Despite the setback, the eight-episode series is still targeted for a 2024 launch, with production not expected to begin until next year. 

The project has been in various stages of development since DiCaprio bought the film rights to the book in 2010, and then set it up to be a feature at Paramount with Scorsese to serve as director. 

But in 2019, Hulu announced a change of direction and that it was now being developed as a big-budget series with DiCaprio and Scorsese executive producing. 

The Oscar-winning actor is not expected to star in the show.

A search for Reeves’ replacement has already gotten underway.

Just a few weeks ago, it was revealed that Reeves had signed-on to star in the long-awaited sequel to the 2005 superhero horror film, Constantine.

Deadline was among the publications to report that Warner Bros. had resurrected the DC character with Reeves set to return as John Constantine, some 17 years after the original made its premiere.

At this point, it’s not known if any of the co-stars of the original, which include Rachel Weisz and Shia LaBeouf, will reprise their roles

The John Wick franchise has been a big moneymaker, with the two sequels having topped the previous versions at the box office, which combined have raked in more than $600 million.

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019) has the distinction of being the biggest hit with fans, grossing $327.3 million on a $75 million budget.

The neo-noir action thriller, also starring Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgård, Laurence Fishburne, Lance Reddick, Clancy Brown, Scott Adkins and Hiroyuki Sanada, among others, is slated to premiere in theaters March 24, 2023.
