Kenan Thompson says Kanye West held SNL ‘hostage’ with pro-Trump rant

Kenan Thompson appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers on Monday, and the two wasted little time in tackling the Kanye West pro-Trump speech at the end of the 44th season premiere of NBC’s Saturday Night Live.

‘I got to watch the circus unfold,’ said Thompson.

‘We are all entitled to our opinions, although I don’t know if that’s the moment necessarily to hold people hostage like that.’ he added.

Turns out Kenan had already left for the night, when Kanye summoned the cast and host Adam Driver back to the stage to listen to hear his political speech after the broadcast had ended.

‘When you saw what happened were you so happy with the choice you made?’ Meyers asked Thompson to some laughter from the studio audience.

‘For sure…. I felt so bad for those guys because it’s hard to stand there and not be able to debate somebody who is going so far against your personal opinion, and stand there and take it.’

As seen on Chris Rock’s Insta Stories, Kanye went on about the Democrats’ history with the black community: ‘You know, it’s like the plan they did, to take the fathers out the home and promote welfare. Does anybody know about that? That’s a Democratic plan.’

At another point, he said that ‘so many times I talk to, like, a white person about this, and they say: “How could you like Trump? He’s racist.” Well, if I was concerned about racism I would’ve moved out of America a long time ago.’

According to People there were boos from the crowd, in addition to jeering from the Adam Driver and SNL castmember Colin Jost.

Meyers, who is an SNL alum, and Thompson went to talk about how the cast and crew try to make the musical guest and host feel comfortable during their time on the show.

‘We try to cater to the host and make sure they have a good show and what not,’ Thompson said in agreement with Meyers.

‘When musical guests come in and they’re a little bit crazy, maybe they’re a little bit crazy, yea we let them have that,’ Kenan joked to the delight of the audience. ‘We don’t judge, we’re not there to judge.’

In the end, the cast did not get into a debate with West, and eventually they filed off the stage, one-by-one, as he continued his speech.

As seen by the many sketches since the 2016 Presidential campaign, Saturday Night Live has been very forthright with it’s criticism of candidate Trump and now President Trump.
