The five-bedroom residence sits on the 12th and 13th levels and boasts views of Garden Island, Darling Point and Manly.

Mr Packer regarded it as his ‘private retreat’ and he reportedly employed a chef, chauffeur, nurse and housekeeper at the residence.

He began $2million renovations on the penthouse just months before his death in 2005.

Renovators built an internal staircase that connected the two apartments. Mr Packer also owned two apartments on the lower levels and dedicated them to his staff.

Former state minister Jack Beale, who owned the property before Mr Packer, said it was a place for Mr Packer to escape.

‘[He] loved the place because he could get away from other things,’ he said.

Ms Trethowan was a mistress and longtime employee of Mr Packer.

She had been running for 22 years his Hyde Park Club – a health and fitness club operating at the bottom of Packer’s office on Park Street.

Trethowan has amassed a large property portfolio and counts residences at Whale Beach, Edgecliff and a commercial property in Bondi Junction, Sydney Morning Herald reported.

She had sold one of the lower apartments in the Toft Monk for $3.25million – after it was bought for $1.5million in 1999.
