American expansion west of the Mississippi prompted the U.S. congress to fund what became known as the Hayden Expedition in 1971, one of four groups who sought to explore the rugged terrain that is now Yellowstone.

In an exclusive clip, Costner explains that the groups were looking for minerals to mine in the untapped wilderness, as well as a pathway for a railroad to connect the mighty Mississippi to the Pacific.

‘They weren’t here to protect Yellowstone, they were here to tear it to shreds in the name of progress but something happened during that three month journey,’ he intones.

‘This place, it did something to them, got inside them and slowly but surely started to change their minds.’
