Having struggled for large spells of last season, De Bruyne has featured in every Premier League and Champions League games this season.

But after he was substituted towards the end of the weekend win away to Everton, he will sit out for the first time when the Croatian side visit the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night.

De Bruyne was left unhappy following a heavy challenge from Everton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin 10 minutes before the final whistle and he had some stern words for his opposite number.

John Stones and Aymeric Laporte will also miss out as Guardiola faces the prospect of shuffling his pack.

City fans will hope De Bruyne’s midweek absence is merely precautionary with a look ahead to the weekend hosting of Wolves given City have ground to make up on league leaders Liverpool.
