Kevin Trapp: Loris Karius will ‘come back’ from Champions League gaffes

Kevin Trapp has backed fellow goalkeeper Loris Karius to come back stronger after his two major mistakes in Liverpool’s Champions League final defeat by Real Madrid.

Karius threw the ball straight at Karim Benzema to gift Real their first goal, before fumbling a speculative Gareth Bale shot into his own net for the Spanish side’s third.

It emerged earlier this week that Karius had been playing with concussion after a collision with Sergio Ramos moments before Benzema’s opener.

PSG stopper Trapp, who is going to the World Cup with Germany ahead of compatriot Karius, said: ‘If it is true that he had a concussion and that led to the mistakes, that would be madness.

‘Then, that he played on, props to him for doing that. I had a concussion once and I couldn’t play… at all.

‘But maybe the adrenaline pushed him through and he didn’t realise it. If it impacted him, I don’t know, I wasn’t in his body. But I know Loris a little bit. I know he will come back from that.’

Karius appears likely to leave Liverpool this summer, or at least be replaced as the club’s No 1 keeper by a new recruit.

But Trapp is convinced that 24-year-old Karius is an excellent keeper.

‘I know how it feels to make a mistake,’ Trapp explained. ‘As a goalkeeper, mistakes can happen, it is completely human.

‘It is hard for him, because he has had a great career thus far. He fought to be Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper again, he got to the Champions League final, he performed well. And then this happens in the final, of all things. It can happen, but it is really hard in a game this big.’
