A KFC customer lashed out at the fast food giant for serving her ‘mouldy’ popcorn chicken.

The frustrated customer said they were served the ‘mouldy’ food at the Ballina Fair store, northeast NSW, on Monday.

However, a KFC spokesperson since said the grey patches on the chicken were not mould or anything harmful.

‘I went to KFC Ballina Fair yesterday to get some popcorn chicken for lunch before returning home,’ the customer wrote in a since-deleted Facebook post.

‘I had already eaten a few pieces before I saw it — a piece of mould partly squashed chicken.’

‘Disgusting dirty animals. I will never go back there again.’

The customer shared two photos of the popcorn chicken with grey patches.

Several commenters reacted to the post with nauseated and disgusted emojis.

A KFC spokesperson told Yahoo News the colouration was nothing that could have harmed the customer.

‘We’re sorry for this customer’s experience but can confirm that the colouring found on the chicken was not mould or anything harmful,’ they said.

A former KFC employee said the 'mouldy' chicken (above) discolouration was likely from the chicken rubbing against the side of a grease buildup in the chicken warmer

‘The customer was immediately provided with a replacement of Popcorn Chicken.’

A former KFC employee told Daily Mail Australia the discolouration was likely caused by a grease buildup inside the chicken warmer.

‘Often chicken that is on the side of racks will rub against the warmer and become discoloured from grease buildup,’ they said.
