The UFC 279 main event clash between Khamzat Chimaev and Nate Diaz is in serious jeopardy after the undefeated Swedish star missed the welterweight limit by seven pounds at the weigh-in on Friday.

Chimaev stepped on the scales at the UFC weigh-in at 178.5lbs, seven-and-a-half pounds over the non-title welterweight limit.

After he failed to make the weight limit, Chimaev took to Twitter to jokingly blame training partner Darren Till for the miss, sharing a doctored photo of the pair alongside laughing emojis with the caption ‘it’s his fault’.

The promotion has yet to announce the status of the pay-per-view main event, but reports suggest that co-main event star Tony Ferguson could face off against Diaz if Chimaev is forced off the card.

Former UFC welterweight, and training partner of Diaz, Yancy Medeiros weighed in on the situation on social media, writing: ‘He didn’t miss weight. He didn’t want to make weight.’

Chimaev wasn’t the only fighter to miss weight ahead of UFC 279, though.

American Chris Barnett became just the second heavyweight ever to miss weight in the UFC after he failed to make the 265lbs limit ahead of his preliminary card fight with Jake Collier.
