A violent knife criminal who murdered a young dad in Scotland is fighting for his life after he himself was stabbed in a prison attack.

John Blake, 30, who left his neighbour to bleed to death outside his home in Lochgelly, Fife, is in a serious condition after his lung was punctured in the attack.

Blake killed Sean Stark eight years ago after the father-of-two had tried to break up a fight and stop another neighbour being beaten up.

The killer was assaulted in Glenochil prison in Clackmannanshire in what Scottish police are describing as an attempted murder, according to the Daily Record.

A prison source said: ‘Blake was stabbed in his cell on Sunday. He’s in a bad way. He’s got a punctured lung.

‘It’s ironic he’s fighting for his life after being stabbed considering he is in prison for stabbing an innocent man to death.

‘Someone clearly wants Blake dead.’

The killer had only been out of prison for six weeks when he slaughtered Mr Stark in 2009.

The 25-year-old Mr Stark had been living in Lochgelly with his childhood sweetheart Melanie Stewart and their daughters, aged one and three.

He was described in court as a ‘loyal and lovable family man’.

He was trying to protect another neighbour when Blake turned on him with a knife and struck him with six fatal blows to the lung and heart.

Father-of-one Blake, who had previous convictions for assault, received a life sentence for murder and was told he would serve at least 17 years in prison.

Police confirmed they were investigating an attempted murder at HMP Glenochil after a 30-year-old man had sustained serious injuries.

He is being treated at Forth Valley Royal Hospital where his condition is reported to be stable.
