After the last episode of season three left Eve on bad terms with assassin Villanelle (Jodie Comer), the season four opener picks up with Eve working in private security.

Formerly a British intelligence agent, Eve is seeking revenge against the assassin group.

A member of The Twelve, Helene (Camille Cottin), is a prime target.

Carolyn (Fiona Shaw), Eve’s previous boss, is still set on reaching the dangerous organization.

The problem is, she’s been demoted to a lower-ranking status and needs Eve to take charge of the investigation – specifically hunting down the person who ordered the killing of her son Kenny (Sean Delaney).

At the start of the episode Eve is approached by Carolyn in an unexpected ambush that a new coworker named Yusuf (Robert Gilbert) helped coordinate.

‘Whatever it is, no,’ Eve says before Carolyn can get a word in.

Carolyn replies: ‘I was about to give you a compliment. You look purposeful, less untethered. It suits you.’

Eve thanks her and then Carolyn begins to set up her ask. ‘There’s been a spate of murders. All of them tortured, none of them solved.

‘The first victim was someone in Paul’s phone book, the second was linked to the first and the third is suspected something similar. Someone has been hunting and killing members of The Twelve — that means they know a damn sight more than we do about who they are. Which in turn, makes me want to know them’

Explaining her reasoning, Carolyn adds: ‘Unfortunately my avenues of investigation have been recently cut off. So I need you to take up my good work and continue the investigation.’

Then she hands Eve a folder of documents, which Eve rejects by laughing and tossing the folder onto the hood of the car Carolyn is leaning against.

Carolyn pleads her case: ‘I’m hardly asking for a kidney, Eve. But if I am, I’m offering you a slice of lung in return, you’re clearly still looking into them.

‘Why else would you be working for a private security firm?’

Getting desperate, Carolyn offers Eve money from an ‘unfashionable amount of inherited wealth.’

‘You’re still playing the same old game of chess,’ Eve responds to the offer.

‘See this is what I’m talking about. I want to sweep the chessboard off the table and set it on fire,’ she expresses.
