Kim Kardashian and YouTuber Desi Perkins appear in video

Kim Kardashian West made headlines this week for her controversy surrounding vlogger Jeffree Star’s racist comments and her admission that she is trying for a third child, but in advance of her second KKW Beauty product, she also collaborated on a YouTube video with make-up artist Desi Perkins.

In the video, Desi, who boasts 2.5 million subscribers to her channel, does Kim’s make-up using the upcoming KKW Beauty Powder Contour and Highlight Kit (available August 22) and Desi’s own new product, the Desi x Katy Dose of Colors Eyeshadow Palette, which is currently sold out but will be restocked in September.

As Desi gives the 36-year-old reality star a glittering purple eye and perfectly sculpted cheeks, the two women talk about everything from the beauty item Kim shoplifted with Nicole Richie to the age she’ll allow daughter North, 4, to wear make-up.

The video begins like any other make-up tutorial, with Desi prepping Kim’s face with the MAC Strobe Cream as a moisturizer.

‘Every time I do a tutorial, I just go home and go make-up shopping,’ Kim tells her. ‘I feel like I haven’t updated my products in a while, and I get so inspired.’

Since launching KKW Beauty in June, the mom of two has filmed make-up tutorials with other vloggers including Patrick Starrr and Jaclyn Hill, in addition to her longtime make-up artist Mario Dedivanovic.

It’s at this point, however, that her so-called tutorial with Desi becomes more of an interview than a step-by-step how-to.

ON CLOTHES, KANYE AND HER KIDS…

Do you keep the dresses you wear?

‘I keep all the dresses. I have a storage facility. I even have some of the old Herve Leger dresses that I wore when I was so obsessed.’

Who has a bigger closet, you or Kanye?

‘You know what? I bet his archive is bigger because he keeps everything, but he keeps it separate, like totally outside of the house.’

Don't grow up too fast! Kim says she'll most likely let North start wearing make-up at age 12

Don’t grow up too fast! Kim says she’ll most likely let North start wearing make-up at age 12

What age will you start letting North wear make-up?

‘Probably 12,’ Kim says without hesitation. ‘That’s when I started to get into it. And then when I was 14, my dad got me make-up lessons and they video taped it and showed us how to put on liner and lashes. They were really just into contour and concealer. It was all like kind of nude and monochromatic in high school, which is so my vibe and probably why I like the kind of make-up that I like [now].

How is it different having a boy than a girl?

‘It’s so different. They always want to run around. North can lay in bed with me, and maybe it’s like the age, too, but she’ll watch cute shows. The shows that he wants to watch are completely different, and he just wants to run around 24/7.’

Have you ever gotten your make-up done at a MAC counter?

‘Yeah, I used to go all the time. I lived right behind a MAC store on Robertson, so I would walk over there and get my make-up done. I got my prom make-up done there. I got this kind of like purple-y smoke look. That was my boyfriend’s prom. And then for my actual prom I did a burgundy look…My dad used to freak out. That’s why he got us the make-up lessons because he was like, “You girls are going to have to learn to do this right.”‘

What’s your favorite type of make-up?

‘If I could wear one look for the rest of my life, it would definitely be really sleek, straight hair with a really matte, chiseled, probably with like a cut-crease, all nude tones.

‘I remember when I did the collab with Kylie for the lips, people were like, “Four nudes? Why are you doing four nudes?” and I was like, “That’s all I wear, and there’s lots of shades of nudes.” Having it be too light is really frustrating because it will just completely ruin the look.’

Can you do a winged liner?

‘Only if I had to, like if it’s an emergency.’

What kind of lashes do you usually wear?

‘Individuals, I like. I can barely put lashes on, and it’s harder if the strip is really thick.’

ON HER BIGGEST BEAUTY CONFESSIONS…

Alternate reality: If she wasn't creating a cosmetic empire and being a reality TV star, Kim says she would be a forensic investigator

Alternate reality: If she wasn’t creating a cosmetic empire and being a reality TV star, Kim says she would be a forensic investigator

‘I actually stole a lipstick once from Rite Aid. We didn’t get in trouble. We didn’t get caught. It was from Rite-Aid in Malibu. I’ll never forget it. It was me and Nicole Richie and we were like 11 years old and we couldn’t not believe we stole this.’

Did you ever have an embarrassing make-up moment that was photographed?

‘All the time. I look back at how white I used to do my under-eyes and it was so white and so crazy.’

What would you be doing if you weren’t doing what you’re doing now?

‘My friends and I joke all the time that I would definitely be a good publicist, but I think I would be like a forensic investigator. It’s just like what I feel like I could do really well, and I am really fascinated by different trials and it’s like all the kinds of shows I watch.’

ON HER HAIR AND SKINCARE SECRETS…

Don't be fooled: Kim's long, sleek hair is the result of extensions, which she has learned to expertly blend with her own blunt-cut strands

What’s your best skincare tip?

‘I love to try so many different products, and it is about trying so many different things, I think, but always having my skin moisturized.’

How do you blend your extensions into your hair so well?

‘You can hold my hair if you want. It’s not mine. But it is mine, I guess. I bought it. I used to have really good, long hair. Like I’ll look back at pictures and be like those were the days when I didn’t even know what hair extensions or lashes were, and it looked good. My hair is pretty good, though. I just cut it really blunt and that was really hard.’

To blend it, ‘I braid it under on the sides in front and then I glue the top pieces up to here (about an inch-and-half from her forehead).’

As the video wraps, Kim tells Desi how much she loves the look.  ‘What good make-up,’ she says. ‘This eyeshadow is everything.’
