Kimmel kicks off Oscars with jokes about Harvey Weinstein

Jimmy Kimmel returned to the stage as he hosted the Oscars for the second year in a row on Sunday.

But after a tense year in show business, the late night host found himself walking a delicate line.

Kimmel joked about the many men in Hollywood accused of sexual misconduct since Harvey Weinstein, by joking about the Oscar statue.

‘Oscar is a very respected man in Hollywood, just look at him. He keeps his hands where you can see them, never says a rude word, and most importantly no penis,’ he said, adding, ‘He is truly a statue of limitations.’

Kimmel also marked the incredible rise seen recently by women in the industry.

‘I remember a time when the major studios didn’t believe a woman or a minority could open a super hero movie,’ he said – referencing Israeli actress Gal Gadot who played the title role in ‘Wonder Woman’  –  ‘and the reason I remember that time is because it was March of last year.’

He discussed how disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein and demanded that Hollywood stamp out bad behavior.

'If we can work together to stop sexual harassment in the workplace. If we can do that, women will only have to deal with that every other place they go,' he continued, joking

The late night host also took a swipe at Vice President Mike Pence, who is known for his anti-gay views.

‘We don’t make films like ‘Call Me by Your Name’ to make money. We make them to upset Mike Pence,’ Kimmel said.

The film is a coming-age of drama about the relationship between a 17-year-old boy living in Italy, played by Timothée Chalamet, and his father’s American assistant, played by Armie Hammer.

Addressing first-time nominee, ‘Get Out’ director Jordan Peele, Kimmel said, “None other than President Trump called ‘Get Out’ the best 3/4 of a movie he had seen this year.’

He took another zing at the White House following the resignation of White House Communications Director Hope Hicks.

‘If the last two years have taught us anything, it’s that reality can be depressing. But tonight’s nominated documentaries show us that were there is darkness, there’s also hope. Except at the White House. Hope quit on Wednesday.’

Kimmel also made a crack about the mix-up last year that saw Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty accidentally announced ‘La La Land’ instead of ‘Moonlight’ as Best Picture.

Some of you will be going home tonight with an Academy Award. This year, when you hear your name called. Don’t get up right away,’ he joked.

‘What happened last year was unfortunate,’ Kimmel continued, explaining that last year, the Oscar producers wanted him to do a comedy bit with the Price Waterhouse accountants. ‘I said, “No, I don’t want to do comedy with the accountants.” And then the accountants went and did comedy on their own.’

Kimmel previously confirmed there would be no jokes about the #MeToo at this year’s show.

Jimmy Kimmel’s opening jokes at the 90th Academy Awards

The ‘ideal man’Oscar and #TimesUp

‘Oscar is the most respected man in Hollywood – he keeps his hands where you can see them, never says a rude word and, most importantly, no penis at all.

‘He is literally a statute of limitations, and that’s the kind of men we need more of in this town.’

‘Oscar is 90 years old… he is probably at home right now watching Fox News.’

On Harvey Weinstein, who was expelled from the Academy: ‘What happened with Harvey and what’s happening all over is long overdue… If we can work together to stop sexual harassment in the workplace, if we can do that, women will only have to deal with that every other place they go.’

President Trump

‘None other than President Trump called Get Out the best first three-quarters of a movie this year.’

‘I want to say thank you to President Trump. Remember last year when it seemed like the Oscars were racist? It’s gone, thanks to him!’

Mike Pence

‘We don’t make films like Call Me by Your Name to make money… we make them to upset Mike Pence.’

Women in Hollywood

On Meryl Streep not receiving an Oscar nomination between 1992-1995: ‘The only reason was that she was in prison.’

On I, Tonya dream cast: ‘Whose knee caps did Tonya Harding have to break to get this?’

‘Here’s how clueless Hollywood is about women… We made a movie called What Women Want, and it starred Mel Gibson.’

On acceptance speeches

‘This is a really long show… so whoever gives the shortest speech tonight … will go home with… *a brand new jet ski!* (Price is Right scene)

‘Some of you will be going home tonight with an Academy Award. This year, when you hear your name called. Don’t get up right away. Give us a minute.’

Price Waterhouse (Last year’s Best Picture blunder)

‘What happened last year was unfortunate… I said, “No, I don’t want to do comedy with the accountants.” And then the accountants went and did comedy on their own.”

Speaking on ABC’s ‘Good Morning America’, he explained that the evening was about making the night memorable for all the people who’ve been ‘dreaming about… winning an Oscar for their whole lives.’

He added: ‘I’m not going to…stop any bad behavior with my jokes.’

Kimmel did admit, however, that he wasn’t pulling any punches when it came to politics.

That is to be expected – he has been a vocal critic of the POTUS and has used his show to discuss health care, immigration reform, and other serious matters several times in past months on his own show.
